Leicester City FC have generously donated some 200+ "flip up" seats
to Leicester Monarchs from their old Filbert Street ground, hopefully they
should be fitted to the existing terracing before the start of the
new season.
The club have also invited the 5 riders from the under 13 team finals
to the next home match where they will feature in the programme and
be introduced to the players. We hope to build on this relationship
and hopefully generate some good local publicity for Cycle Speedway.
Thanks also to CMB International who dismantled and delivered the
seats for us FOC.
Stoke's fixture with Coventry on the 20th October did not take place when the visitors failed to appear as expected.
The home side waited for an extra hour in case there was confusion over the start time and tried to contact Coventry officials, but were unsuccessful. Stoke secretary Avon Allcock was disappointed, "Stoke had 26 Riders ready to race ....and have put so much effort in to the preparation for the days event."
At the time of writing it is uncertain what problems beset Coventry.
15-9-02 Youngsters Excite reports Tim Crusher
British Team Championships are the theme this month with all age groups' team finals being decided in September.
The British U-13 Team Championship at Horspath contained some of the best junior racing you could wish for. The qualifying rounds saw Leicester and Newport win with a
little to spare but the reportage was something else! I've never seen
so little seperating so many teams and it made for some exciting
racing, you can only feel sympathy for the teams who didn't quite
make it to the final.
Qualifier 1: Winner Leicester. Eliminated: Ipswich A
Qualifier 2: Winner Newport. Eliminated: Ipswich B

04-8-02 A&T Celebrate
Members of the Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare / CTA Direct Cycle Speedway Club are celebrating this week after
receiving a grant of £5000 from the National Lottery's Awards for All programme.
The grant will allow the club to purchase ten new racing cycles and a storage cabin, as well as funding two club coaches to
be trained to British Cycling's Level 2 Club Coach standard. This will enable the club to continue recruiting and developing
new and local talent for the Astley & Tyldesley club, as well as assisting British Cycling with their Talent Team development,
when their members use the Gin Pit track as part of the World Class Start Sprint Training programme.
28-6-02 Brian Moston
It is with regret to report the death of former British champion Brian Moston.
Brian was involved with and followed cycle speedway all his life and competed in ten National individual championships, winning the title at Hungerford in 1959. He was also runner-up in the 1960 World individual championships.
Brian, a founder member and first chairman of the Cycle Speedway Council, died at his home on 26/6/02 aged 71.
16-6-02 England Inspired report from Mike Hack
The four home nations - England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales - converged on Gin Pit on Saturday
for the annual Home International Cycle Speedway match. Torrential rain the previous evening,
when 2 inches fell in 2 hours, would have rendered many circuits unrideable. However, the Gin
Pit circuit drained superbly and although the track was softer than usual, there was never any
danger of the match being called off.
England, perhaps inspired by the football team's heroics earlier in the afternoon against Denmark,
quickly set the standard, winning the opening four races, with Wales in hot pursuit. Ireland lost the
services of their veteran captain, Joe McLaughlin, who was taken to hospital with a suspected
broken collar bone and concussion, after a bizarre crash in heat 2, when his front wheel dug into
the ground on the pits bend, pitching him head first over his handlebars as his bike snapped in
two, with no other rider involved. Team mate Mick Docker was in the wars in the next race, falling
heavily on the back straight after the chain came off his machine, although he took his next two
races before another heavy fall in heat 11 ruled him out of the match. It was always an uphill
struggle for the Irish but they had a titanic battle with the Scots throughout to determine the 3rd
place in the match.
England were fast from the start throughout and once in front never looked like being caught. Lee
Aris and Darren Slater were simply yards ahead of the opposition, winning every race
convincingly. Paul Dyson was unbeaten in his three races, with Dave Solomon winning two and
suffering a gate exclusion in his other. On the two occasions when Aris and Dyson missed the
start, they executed superb passes on the pits bend by cutting back inside their opponents to
sprint past them to take the wins. Wales rode well throughout and were never threatened for
second place. Danny Harper was their sole race winner, with Allan Busby and Colin Simmons
both scoring well. Ireland and Scotland had a real battle throughout for third place, before Kevin
Burns secured 3rd place for the Scots by finishing ahead of Gary Colby in the final race. Ireland's
and Scotland's tail end riders never looked comfortable on the track, with Elliott Jones ruled out
of the match after losing control on exiting the pits bend and taking a heavy fall after clipping the
outer kerb in heat 9. Burns was best for Scotland, with Arron Campbell and hard pressed reserve /
coach Martin Gamble impressing for the Irish.
Evidence that the Astley & Tyldesley track held up really well after the previous night's deluge
came when Lee Aris won the final race in a time less than 1 second off the long standing track
record. Fellow maximum man Darren Slater would surely have beaten the record had he not
coasted from the pits bend when winning heat 15.
The match was well handled by referee Frank Finnigan (Cheshire), with the sport once again grateful to the
Tyldesley Division of the St. John Ambulance for their prompt treatment of the injured riders. The
match was sponsored by the Eagle School of Motoring, Astley.
Presentations were made to all competitors and the referee by: the match sponsor, Steve Mills;
the British Cycling Cycle Speedway Administrator, Brian Furness; the Astley & Tyldesley Club
chairman, Bill Phillips.

29-4-02 Break for Williamson
With the season barely started Richard Williamson will have an enforced rest after breaking his wrist at Hawbush. The key Somersham rider clashed with home rider Nicky Gunkel in a South East League match and a hospital check-up later confirmed the bad news. Williamson was in fine form and this is a real blow to both rider and club.
08-4-02 Clubs Withdraw
Bad news for the sport in the North/Midlands & South Western regions which have both seen a club has withdraw from each league on the eve of the season. Tameside and Exeter have will now not contest their region's main league and the relevant fixtures have been cancelled.
08-4-02 Transfers
A handful of riders have decided to seek pastures new in 2002 and their transfers have now been approved by BCF HQ.

18-3-02 Supplementary Rules
The South East region has released a set of supplementary rules to apply to their racing. Some of them relate to the region's own circumstances, while others perhaps warrant consideration for wider usage in the future....
Fixture changes:
All matches must take place according to the Fixture list. If a club calls off a fixture within 14 days of scheduled date that club will have 2 league points deducted. Matches postponed due to, club being involved in British event and or adverse weather, league points may not be deducted.
Any cancellation must be notified to the League recorder and Fixtures secretary, so as to deduct the points if required to do so and for a new date to be appointed.
Referees:
The staging club (home) is responsible for organising a referee unless the League/Association appoints one.
Doubled-up fixtures:
Where any 2 clubs compete in the same multiple leagues a single fixture may count towards both leagues if both teams have agree.
Programmes:
Home clubs are responsible for sending completed score-sheets to the league recorder. Score-sheets not received within 7 days of the fixture will incur a £5.00 fine for the home club.
Restricted Riders:
Clubs in SE div 1 may also enter SE div 2. In this case some riders may be 'restricted' from appearing in div 2. For 2002 the following restricted riders (not available here) may not compete in Div 2. If any restricted riders are named on the program, the opposition will gain 15 race points for each one used. The League committee can alter any clubs restricted list at any time in the season. With 7 days notice of any changes and reasons for changes being given to the club.
Secondary Registrations:
Secondary Registered riders are allowed as per BC rules, however no club can have more than two Secondary Registered riders.
Race format:
The official 18-ht formula is to be used for league fixtures. The 6 rider possible 8 rider 13-heat formula may be used in SE Div 2, but only with the agreement of both teams involved.
Supplementary reserves:
Teams may name any number of supplementary reserves in addition to the programmed 8. These riders may be used in any heat and can have a maximum of 3 rides each in place of programmed riders.
Under-strength teams:
Where a team has only 7 riders the opposition will nominate one rider who will be allowed to take a 6th ride covering a heat vacancy. Where a team has 6 or less riders the opposition will nominate 2 riders who will be allowed to take a 6th ride covering heat vacancies. In extreme cases alternatives may be employed if both teams agree.
Eligibility:
EACSA events are open to registered members of EACSA affiliated clubs.
In EACSA events riders will represent their EACSA affiliated club. In cases where both clubs are EACSA affiliated the rider will represent their parent club.
15-3-02 New Handbooks
The 2002 Cycle Speedway handbook is out now and all riders should be receiving them direct in the post.
The sport's bible includes all the important contacts, rules and fixtures. A few new regulations are also published for the first time, the most important being that secondary registrations are now allowed in major leagues.
13-1-02 South East League AGM
A fairly straightforward meeting of the South East clubs took place today with few changes implemented, highlighting the stability in the region.
The league structure will remain the same. Although alternatives were suggested, it was felt that the current arrangement was the best way to satisfy the wide range of needs of the member clubs. The only change is that Norwich will drop to division 2 following the loss of some riders. The position of Kesgrave also needs confirming as they were not represented at the meeting.
The league has no problems financially, so affilliation fees will not change. This could be important, as it was announced that British Cycling club fees have been dramatically increased.
Other news announced was that the rules on Secondary registrations have been suitably modified. It means riders can now compete in leagues in which their primary club do not compete.
The executive committee of Terry Ashford, Glenn Grange, & Steve Harvie will continue in their posts. The only personnel change was that Mel Perkins agreed to organise the fixtures in addition to his treasurer's role.
Prior to the meeting the East Anglian Association met, and again organised some additional events for those clubs.
Some good news was that a new club @ Terrington St. John is emerging. They are still negotiating for a track site, but hopefully some of their riders will appear in the EA events.
02-1-02 Cycling at the Discotheque
The Gt. Blakenham club hold their annual Christmas dance night on January 12 at the village hall. Contact Terry Ashford for more details.
