Ken Graham Memorial Trophy

Monday May 7 - Bury Report from John Whiting

Bank Holiday Monday saw Bury stage the Ken Graham trophies for both Junior and Senior riders. Nice to see several visitors from East Anglia and it proved to be their day. Some excellent racing saw Slater 12, Pearce 12 and Scrannage 11, leading the field after 3 races. Adam Peck had 10 points. In a vital race Slater lead Pearce who fell and scored only one point. Scrannage and Peck staved in contention with victories. Heat 17 was a decider, Scrannage had the inner with 15points, needing to defeat Slater for a runoff, with Slater on 4. It was the British champion who gained from the start with Ben Scrannage falling as he challenged. A 4th win to Pearce set up a runoff with Adam Peck which he won. Darren Slater 20, Rob Pearce 17, Adam Peck 17. Some really good racing from all involved.
The senior event had a very strong field, including current Champion Phil Howells making his first visit to Bury. Rob Pearce picked up in Heat 1 to record a new track record, whilst defending champion Terry Norman felt he deserved a rerun, after a first bend tangle. Howells scored in the second gate to line. Jason Ashford, another making a first visit, scored victories in the Heats 4+6, Howells moved in his second, missed by the Referee, as he lead home Terry Norman. 3 races gone and the East Anglians remained in the lead, Darren Kent had 10 as did Craig Nash, and Paul White . Terry Norman with 9. Howeels lead from the gate and just held on to inflict Ashford's first defeat. Terry Norman and Darren Kent continued their good form. Howells duly won his last race for a 5 ride Maximum. However Norman, Kent, Ashford all met, all with an eye on a Trophy. A super race ensued, Terry Norman won from Jason, most unlucky was Darren Kent who bucked his wheel. Excellent racing throughout the 2 matches, and certainly the 2 defending Champions must have felt the Track was to their taste. Interesting to see the results on August the 27th.
