2nd with Pike remounting for 3rd.The 7-2 to ROW put them into
the lead for the only time in the match.Heat 6 saw Ison make the
gate as Doherty and Hunt relegated Edson to the back. That's how

over far enough for Hunt to get through and go on to take the

pass Eaton going along the back straight but lost control of his
bike and fell, leaving team-mate Davies with nowhere to go.The
race was stopped and all 4 riders were put back in as referee
Mick Harley deemed the fall to be a racing incident. The restart
saw R Jones make the start and move Pike over to create a gap
which Eaton made use of to nip through and challenge R Jones. As
the riders exited the pit bend Eaton held up R Jones long enough
for Pike to move ahead.Going along the back straight R Jones went
inside Eaton but Eaton got back inside and took the lead going
into the pit bend.R Jones then challenged Pike for 2nd and took
it as the riders entered turn 1 on lap 4.Exiting turn 2 Pike stormed
round the outside of R Jones to finish behind Eaton with Davies
at the back.Heat 9 saw Evans make the gate and nudge Doherty over
the inside edge.Myhill and Edson then went round the recovering
Doherty.Going along the back straight on lap 3 Myhill went round
Evans and held on for the win as Edson took 3rd ahead of Doherty.

who emerged in front ahead of Davies,Evans and Pike.Entering the
pit bend Pike got inside Davies and Evans and held on for 2nd
behind Bartram but ahead of Evans and Davies.Heat 15 saw Gamble
make the gate ahead of R Jones but Myhill powered round both of
them to take the lead and go on for the win as Gamble took 2nd

The ROW side contained 2 Poles,3 Scots,1 Welshman,1 Austrailan
and 1 Australian based Welshman. The toss for gates was won by
England captain Lee Aris who chose gates 2 and 4 for heat 1.
Heat 1 didn't get off the start line at first as Aaron Lowey twitched
at the start but he was not excluded as there was deemed to be
too much noise. When the race did start Daniel Pudney made the
gate and led but Lowey powered round from gate 4 into 2nd
going along the back straight with Terry Norman holding 3rd
ahead of Paul White.Just as the riders were about to go into lap
3 Lowey took a heavy tumble.Judging by the way he fell it looked
as though his chain had come off.Pudney took the win ahead of
Norman and White. Heat 2 saw Adam Peck make the gate and lead
all the way as Steve Harris took advantage of Elliott Jones slipping
on the exit of turn 2 to roar round the outside and take 2nd with

Szymanski rocket out from gate 3 and lead all the way from Chris
Jewkes with Aris 3rd after passing Lukasz Nowacki on the puits

with Mike Morgans last after slipping his pedals exiting turn
2 on lap 2.Heat 5 saw Richard Hunt and Richard Williamson gate
together but Hunt slid off exiting turn 2 enabling Williamson
to go clear and take the win whilst behind him White and Lowey
had a good scrap for 2nd and 3rd which became 3rd and 4th on the
pits bend on lap 3 after White moved Lowey over far enough for
Hunt to go through for 2nd.Heat 6 saw Nowacki and Szymanski rocket
out from the gate and take maximum points over Peck and Harris
which put ROW 3 points ahead.Heat 7 saw Pudney storm from gate
1 and lead all the way from Aris with Jewkes holding off White
for 3rd.Heat 8 saw Norman outgate Newsome from gate 1 and Lowey
move into 2nd,nudging Newsome who fell awkwardly on his arm.The
race was stopped and Newsome was excluded as the cause of the
stoppage. The restart saw Norman blast from gate 1 and lead all
the way as Jones powered round Lowey for 2nd,nudging him in the
process and causing him to fall. The 6-3 to England made the scores
level.Heat 9 saw England make a change, bringing in Garry Pearce
for Morgans.Nowacki powered round from gate 3 and led all the
way with Harris exploiting a gap on the inside to shoot through
for 2nd as Pearce held off Murphy for 3rd until Murphy went outside
Pearce going into the pits bend on the final lap.
HALF TIME SCORE:Rest of the World 45 England 43.
Heat 10 saw Szymanski rocket out from gate 3 and lead Peck with
Williamson holding 3rd from Hunt until the former fell going into
the 3rd turn.Meanwhile up front Szymanski held off Peck until
the exit of turn 2 on the last lap when Peck produced a superb
move up the inside of the Pole to take the lead and race win as
Hunt took 3rd ahead of the remounted Williamson.Heat 11 got as
far as turn 1 when Newsome went down following a clash of bikes
and a restart was called with all 4.The restart saw an even break
from the gate then Jewkes emerged in front going along the back
striaght.Jones then went inside Aris and Newsome going into the
pits bend but exiting the pit bend Aris slid off and collected
Newsome.Aris remounted to take 3rd ahead of Newsome as up front
Jewkes took the win from Jones. The 6-4 to England levelled the
scores.heat 12 got as far as turn 1 when Peck fell after tangling
with Pudney. The restart saw Peck make the gate and lead all the
way from Pudney with Harris holding off White for 3rd and a 6-4
to England which put them 2 points up.Heat 13 saw Nowacki outgate
Norman as Szymanski powered round both of them and go on to win
the race with Nowacki holding on for 2nd ahead of Loewy and Norman
for a 7-3 to ROW which put them 2 points ahead.Heat 14 saw England
make a reserve change as Morgans came in for Williamson It was

Thursday 24 February:Australia v England
Junior Test Match at Le Fevre
This was the first visit to the track which this scribe would
christen "The Ice Box" due to the fact it always seemed
to be cold in the evenings whenever the 2005 tour visited here.Australia
would have a full line up whereas England would use the same 7
riders as the previous night at Salisbury.
Heat 1 saw Daniel Pike and Chris Eaton storm from the gate to
lead home Ben Schumacher and Lennon Spear.Heat 2 saw Scott Doherty
storm from gate 2 to take the lead as Rob Hunt moved into 2nd
ahead of Peter Savage and Daniel Thompson.Going into the pits
bend Hunt got in front and would stay there for the win.Going
into the pits bend on lap 2 D Thompson went inside Doherty, moving
him over far enough for Savage to go through and take 2nd with
Doherty repassing D Thompson for 3rd going along the back straight
on the last lap.Heat 3 saw Ryan Bartram make a storming gate and
lead all the way from Troy Cowell and David Hartman with Simon
Gamble last after appearing to silp at the start.Gamble did make
a challenge on Hartman going itno the pits bend on the last lap
but both riders fell with Hartman remounting for 3rd ahead of
Gamble.Heat 4 saw Spear and Nick Myhill gate together with Eaton
holding off Ross Priest.Going into the pits bend on lap 2 Priest
fell after clipping the inside kerb.At the same time Myhill powered
round Spear and took the win with Eaton 3rd ahead of the remounted
Priest.Heat 5 saw Pike, the sole England rider, make the gate and
lead all the way from Schumacher and Brad Thompson.Heat 6 saw
Cowell make the gate and lead all the way from Doherty and Hunt
with Hartman at the back.Heat 7 saw Bartram make the gate and
lead all the way
from initially Spear,Gamble and Schumacher. It stayed that way
until the pits bend on the last lap when Spear and Gamble tangled
and Schumacher nipped through to take 2nd ahead of Spear and Gamble.Heat
8 saw Pike make a good start but Savage nudged him exiting turn
2 as Eaton got up to 2nd with Pike holding off D Thompson.Exiting
the pit bend Pike moved inside Savage and held on to take the
win with D Thompson taking 3rd by passing Eaton at the same time
as Pike passed Savage.Heat 9 saw Myhill bolt out from gate 3 and
lead all the way with Doherty holding off Cowell for 2nd and Priest
trailing in last.
HALF TIME SCORE:Australia 39 England 50
Heat 10 saw Hunt and Pike make the gate with Pike going round
Hunt going along the back straight but Hunt went round going into
lap 2 as he and Pike finished ahead of B Thompson and Hartman.Heat
11 saw Gamble make the gate and lead from Savage,D Thompson and
Bartram.Going into the pits bend Savage nudged Gamble but fell,as
did Gamble and Bartram who had nowhere to go.The race was stopped
and Savage was excluded as being the cause of the stoppage. The
restart saw Gamble make the gate and move D Thompson over enough
for Bartram to go through for 2nd behind Gamble but ahead of D
Thompson.Heat 12 saw Spear make the gate and lead from Hunt,Doherty
and Schumacher. That's how it stayed until the last lap when Doherty
moved into 2nd and then he rounded Spear going along the back
straight and held on for the win.Spear then held up Hunt long
enough for Schumacher to nip through for 2nd ahead of Spear and
Hunt.Heat 13 saw Eaton make the gate but Myhill got round him
exiting turn 2 and went on to win as Eaton held off Cowell and
Hartman for 2nd.Heat 14 saw Pike and Bartram storm from the gate
ahead of D Thompson and Priest. The only positional change occurred
going inti the pits bend on lap 1 when Bartram went round Pike.Heat
15 saw an even break from the start by all riders but exiting
turn 2 Gamble emerged in front from Savage,B Thompson and Myhill. As
the riders started lap 2 Savage moved inside Gamble for the lead
as Myhill moved into 3rd ahead of B Thompson.Going into turn 3
on lap 3 Myhill moved inside Savage for the lead.As the rider
started lap 4 B Thompson moved inside Gamble who tried to fight
back but crashed heavily after hitting B Thompson.Myhill took
the win from Savage and B Thompson with Gamble failing to finish.Heat
16 saw Eaton blast round from gate 4 and lead all the way as going
into turn 1 Cowell held up Hunt long enough for Schumacher to
go through for 2nd.Heat 17 was eventful.Firstly the tapes failed
to go up between 2 and 5 seconds. When they did the race got as
far as turn 3 when D Thompson ran into Gamble which caused him
to fall along with Doherty and Spear and the race was stopped.tepmers
then became frayed as it was felt that D Thompson should have
been excluded for his actions.Once order was restored all 4 riders
were allowed back in for the restart which saw Doherty make the
start and lead from Spear with Gamble holding off D Thompson for
3rd until slipping on the pits bend, allowing the Murraylander
through. The race stayed in the order Doherty,Spear,D Thompson,Gamble
until the 3rd bend on lap 4 when Doherty fell after a challenge
by Spear on the outside.Spear went on to win from D Thompson and
Gamble as Doherty remounted for 4th.Heat 18 saw Savage and Myhill
make the gate but going into turn 1 Savage took Myhill's bike
away from him.Myhill promptly retaliated by kicking Savage's rear
wheel, knocking him from his bike.It took the referee a lap before
he finally blew the whistle to stop the race by which time Myhill
and Savage were back on their bikes. The referee's decision was
to exclude Myhill for causing Savage to fall,a bit controversial
as he had been fouled in the first place. The restart saw Savage
make the gate and nudge Bartram going into turn 1 but Bartram
recovered and took the lead going along the back straight.Going
into the pits bend Hartman went inside both Savage and Bartram
then as the riders started lap 2 Savage took the lead as Bartram
fell after clipping Hartman.Savage went on to win from hartman
with Bartram remounting for 3rd which ruined his chances of a
paid maximum.

5's Heat 1 at Le Fevre
This was the first of the so-called "World Cup warm-up"
matches which would give the team managers a chance to ponder
over the selection of their teams for the World Cup on Saturday
week.
Heat 1 didn't get off the line at first as Adam Peck lost his
balance but strangely he wasn't excluded for moving at the start. When
the race started Richard Williamson got out of the gate and led
all the way as Chris Davies made his way into 2nd ahead of Peck
and Mark Winwood but the latter 2 riders moved ahead of Davies
going along the back straight.Going along the back straight on
lap 3 Winwood moved inside Peck and held on for 2nd as Peck finished
3rd ahead of Davies.Heat 2 saw Matt Gentle and Aaron Lowey neck
and neck from the gate as Terry Norman held off Adelaide based
Paul White(riding on his home track) for 3rd.Exiting the pits
bend on lap 1 White fell.Entering lap 2 M Gentle went clear in
front then Norman moved inside Lowey going along the back straight.M
Gentle held on for the win ahead of Norman,Lowey and the remounted
White.Heat 3 saw simultaneous movement by Steve Harris,Jack Spear
and Dave Hemsley at first, then an unsatisfactory start which saw
Allan Busby left at the gate and a restart called for.The restart
saw Hemsley and Harris gate together but going into turn 1 Busby
hit Harris, fell and retired from the race.Going along the back
straight Hemsley powered round Harris and went on to take the
win as Spear trailed in 3rd.Heat 4 saw Lee Aris gate round Dave
Murphy,Ryan Jones and Nigel Greenhalch as the race finished in
that order.Heat 5 saw Garry Pearce lead from the gate ahead of
Ryan Hughes,Nicky Evans and Robert Fleming. That is how it stayed
until turn 1 on lap 3 when Hughes moved inside Pearce who drifted
out far enough for Evans to get through for 2nd but Pearce repassed
Evans going into the final lap as Hughes held on to win from Pearce,Evans
and Fleming.
AFTER 5 HEATS:England I 13,England II 12,Wales I 11,Australia

retook 3rd going into lap 3 as up front Williamson took the win
after passing R Jones on the inside exiting turn 2 on the last
lap.heat 8 saw Hemsley and Lowey gate together and lead from Murpohy
and Evans. That's how it stayed until turn 1 on lap 2 when Lowey
passed his former Poole team-mate on the inside and held on to
win as Murphy finished 3rd ahead of Evans.Heat 9 saw M Gentle
take his 2nd win of the night ahead of Harris,Hughes and Davies.Heat
10 saw Aris make the gate from grid 1 and lead all the way with
Pearce holding 2nd ahead of a battle involving Winwood and Spear
which was resolved when Spear moved inside Winwood as the riders
started lap 2.Spear then passed Pearce for 2nd on the inside going
into the pits bend on lap 2 with Winwood copying Spear's move
on Pearce 1 lap later to finish 3rd.
AFTER 10 HEATS:England I 28,England II 21,Wales I 20,Australia
18,Wales II 12
Heat 11 saw reserve changes galore. For England I Chris Jewkes
came in for Williamson. For England II Hemsley was replaced by
Morgans and for Australia B Gentle came in for Greenhalch. It was
B Gentle who made the gate but Morgans stormed round him as did
Hughes and Jewkes.Going into turn 1 on lap 2 Hughes challenged
Morgans but left a gap big enough for Jewkes to nip through and
finish 2nd behind Morgans with B Gentle 3rd after going inside
Hughes exiting the pits bend on lap 2.Heat 12 saw an even break
from the start by all 4 riders but Winwood emerged in front going
along the back straight ahead of Fleming,Lowey and Busby.Going
along the back straight on lap 2 Lowey moved inside Fleming for
2nd then 1 lap later Lowey did a similar move on Winwood and held
on for the win from Winwood with Busby 3rd after going round Fleming
exiting turn 2 on the last lap.Heat 13 saw Harris make use of
his gate 1 to lead all the way from White Pearce and R Jones in
a race that went with gate positions.Heat 14 saw a reserve change
by England I as Jewkes came in for Aris. The race needed 2 attempts
to start it as at first M Gentle and Jewkes moved together. The
referee Dave Blinston couldn't decide who moved first so all 4
riders were left in.Evans then led from M Gentle Jewkes and Peck.Going
into the pits bend M Gentle moved inside Evans then going into
turn 1 on lap 2 the riders shuffled themselves about and the upshot
was that Peck emerged in front after nudging M Gentle.Jewkes moved
into 2nd after going inside Evans who in turn relegated the Aussie
to the back as Peck held on to win from Jewkes,Evans and M Gentle
who had fallen on turn 1 on lap 3 and remounted.Heat 15 saw 2
reserve changes. For Wales II Kieran Jones came in for Davies and
B Gentle replaced Spear for Australia.Norman blasted from gate
1 and led all the way with Murphy 2nd after rounding K Jones going
along the back straight on lap 1 then B Gentle took 3rd after
passing K Jones going into lap 2.

with M Gentle 2nd after gating round the Welsh riders R Jones
and Winwood who finished in that order.Heat 17 saw K Jones replace
Evans for Wales II>Spear shot out from gate 1 and led all the
way as K Jones forced his way inside White going along the back
straight to take 2nd with Williamson trailing last after sliding
off exiting the pits bend.Heat 18 saw both England teams bring
in their reserves,Jewkes for Lowey(England I) and Morgans for
Pearce(England II).Morgans bolted from gate 4 but going into turn
1 his trailing leg caused Jewkes to fall and Greenhalch to plough
into Jewkes. The race was stopped and all 4 were called back with
Morgans lucky to still be in the race. The restart saw Morgans
bolt from gate 4 again and lead all the way with Greenhalch passing
Jewkes for 2nd on the inside exiting turn 2 after Jewkes had gone
over the inside edge.Davies trailed in last.Heat 19 saw Harris
make the gate and lead all the way as Peck took 2nd after going
inside Murphy exiting turn 2.Murphy held on for 3rd ahead of Fleming.Heat
20 saw a false start due to apparently exzcessive noise. When the
tapes did rise Norman stormed out from gate 2 to lead all the
way from Aris as Hughes held off Busby for 3rd.
AFTER 20 HEATS:England I 52,England II 50,Wales I 37,Australia
35,Wales II 25
Heat 21 saw a reserve change as Jewkes replaced Williamson for
England I.The race didn't get off the start line at first due
to the tapes catching Peck as they went up.Jewkes then made the
gate but Peck got inside him exiting the pits bend.Going into
turn 1 on lap 2 Winwood moved inside Jewkes allowing Davies through
for 2nd ahead of Jewkes and Winwood who dropped back to last.Going

held off Jewkes for 3rd.Australia made a reserve change in heat
22,Brad Gentle replacing his older brother Matt.It was Brad who
made the gate and led all the way with White forcing his way into
2nd ahead of Norman and Lowey. That's how it stayed until the riders
exited the poits bend when White slid off, allowing Norman through
for 2nd.Lowey finished 3rd,despite sliding off 1 lap later than
White in the same place with White himself finishing 4th.Heat
23 saw Wales II make a change as K Jones came in for Busby.Harris

the result when the 2 riders had met in heat 3.Spear took 3rd
after going round K Jones exiting turn 2.Heat 24 saw a false start
due to noise.Murphy then made the gate but Aris got round him
going along the back straight as the race finished in exactly
the same order as they did in heat 4 with R Jones taking 3rd from
Greenhalch.Heat 25 saw Pearce get out from gate 1 and lead all
the way from Hughes, thus avenging the heat 5 result when the 2
riders met.Evans took 3rd ahead of Fleming.Pearce's race win was

with a different line-up to what they would have here.

ahead of Jones after Young fell heavily going along the back straight
on lap 2 and was unable to finish as his chain had come off.

and Wales 6 each,Scotland 5
Heat 7 saw White out again for Wales, this time instead of Hughes. The
race needed 2 attempts to get it started as the tapes caught Winwood
at the first attempt, then Winwood bolted from gate 3 and led all
the way as White took 2nd ahead of Gamble and Murphy.Heat 8 was
a crucial race as it would see 2 of the unbeaten pairs,England
and Poland, meet.Aris shot from the gate and led all the way with
Szymanski and Nowacki combining to keep Hemsley at the back.Heat
9 saw Scotland make a reserve change as Newsome replaced Young. The
race needed 3 attempts to get it started with the first attempt
getting as far as turn 1 where Newsome and Gentle collided and
the race was stopped. The restart didn't get off the start line
as Newsome twitched while under orders and was sent back to the
pits.At the 3rd attempt Pudney and Gentle took their 3rd 1-2 finish,Gentle
taking the win this time round as Pudney held off Jones for 2nd
AFTER 9 HEATS:Australia 21,Engalnd and Poland 19 each,Wales
10,Ireland 9,Scotland 7
Heat 10 saw Szymanski and Nowacki take their 3rd 1-2 finish out
of 4 starts as they led Gamble and Murphy home.Heat 11 didn't
get off the start line at first as Aris was excluded for apparently
moving at the start(he didn't appear to move in the mind of this
scribe).Gentle made use of gate 1 to take his 2nd win of the match
with Pudney holding off Hemsley for 2nd.Heat 12 saw Scotland replace
Young with Newsome and Wales Hughes with White.Newsome led from
the start ahead of Winwood,Jones and White.Going into the pits
turn on lap 2 Winwood moved Newsome over to the outside of the
track with Newsome falling and subsequently failing to finish.Winwood
went on to win the race with White 2nd after getting round Jones
entering the pits bend for the final time. However after the race
had finished White was excluded as he was deemed to have crossed
the outside edge when making his move on Jones but following a
protest from Wales manager Dave Murphy the exclusion was withdrawn
and the result stood as it crossed the line as it was ascertained
that Jones had nudged White over the outside edge.
AFTER 12 HEATS:Australia 28,Poland 26,England 21,Wales
17,Ireland 12,Scotland 9
Heat 13 would decide the destiny of the title as Australia and
Poland would meet.Australia needed a shared heat which would be
enough for them whereas Poland needed a 7-3 to win or a 6-4 to
force a run-off.This was a chance for Gentle to become a World
Champion,having finished 2nd in the 1997 World Final.The first
attempt at the race got as far as turn 2 when Nowacki fell and
interfered with Gentle's progress so a restart was called. This
didn't get off the start line as Gentle moved at the gate and
was sent back to the pits. This meant that Pudney now had to win
the race to give Australia the title.Nowacki made the gate and
led all the way with Pudney taking 2nd after going inside Szymanski
going into the pits bend on lap 3.Szymanski fell and remounted
for 3rd but with his partner Nowacki winning the race the 6 points
for Poland meant they had won.Heat 14 saw Newsome replace Jones
for Scotland.Newsome finally managed to finish a race as he led
all the way from Gamble with Young holding off Murphy for 3rd.The
final heat saw Hemsley gate from 2 and lead all the way with Winwood
holding up Aris long enough for Hughes to nip through for 2nd.Going
along the back straight on lap 2 Aris went inside Winwood for
3rd.

whom Australia used 5 riders who would be involved with the Australia
v Great Britain matches at Senior level,1 that would be involved
at Junior level, namely Brad Gentle(Matt's younger brother) and
2 riders that would not be involved, namely Robert Fleming and
Nigel Greenhalch. For Wales 4 of their Junior riders, brothers Ryan
and Kieran Jones,Nicky Evans and Ryan Hughes, would join up with
Mark Winwood,Allan Busby,Australian based Paul White(who would
be racing on his home track) and Dave Murphy who was also the
team manager.Wales captain Paul White won the coin toss for gate
positions and opted to put Wales on gates 1 and 3 for heat 1.
Heat 1 saw the first reserve change as Kieran Jones was replaced
by Nicky Evans.Mark Winwood made the gate and led all the way
as Matt Gentle initially held 2nd from Evans and Neil Toye.Coming
out of the pits bend M Gentle drifted wide and Toye moved inside
Evans for 2nd with M Gentle recovering to take 3rd from Evans.Heat
2 saw Australia make a reserve change as Brad Hoppo came in for
Nigel Greenhalch. The race needed 3 attempts to get it started.Firstly
Daniel Pudney made the start from Hoppo with Allan Busby and Ryan
Jones 3rd and 4th.Going into the pits bend the race was stopped
after Hoppo had crossed the inside edge and earned himself an
exclusion in the process.The 2nd attempt,without Hoppo,didn't
get off the start line as there was deemed to be too much noise. At
the 3rd attempt Pudney made the gate and led all the way from
R Jones and Busby who had clipped Pudney's rear wheel on the run
to the first bend.Heat 3 saw Tony Herd make the gate and lead
all the way as White held up Brad Gentle long enough for Hoghes
to go up the inside and take 2nd.White took 3rd after holding
off B Gentle.Heat 4 saw M Gentle make the start and lead initially
from Winwood,Evans and Fleming.Going into the pits bend Winwood
moved M Gentle over far enough for Evans to go up the inside and
away for the win with Winwood holding on for 2nd.M Gentle took
3rd from Robert Fleming going into the last lap.Heat 5 saw Dave
Murphy make the gate but Kieran Jones went down after clashing
with the Austrailan riders on the run to turn 1 and the race was
called back. The restart saw Murphy make the gate and lead all
the way from Hoppo and Toye as K Jones finished last after falling
going into turn 1 and remounting.Heat 6 saw B Gentle make a cracking
start and lead going into turn 1 but he slipped, allowing Herd,R
Jones and Busby through who finished in that order as B Gentle
trailed in last.Heat 7 saw M Gentle lead from the start ahead
of Hughes,White and Toye. That's how it stayed until the riders
entered the pits bend on the last lap where M Gentle and Hughes
collided and fell, allowing White to take the win ahead of Toye
with M Gentle and Hughes remounting for 3rd and 4th respectively.Heat
8 saw Pudney make the gate as Winwood gated round Greenhalch to
go into 2nd.Going into the pits bend Greenhalch and K Jones collided
and fell with neither being able to get up quickly enough so the
race was stopped and all 4 riders were put back in.The restart
saw Pudney make the gate from gate 1 and lead all the way from
Winwood,K Jones and Greenhalch.Heat 9 saw Wales make a reserve
change as Murphy replaced Evans.Australia also made a change as
Hoppo replaced B Gentle. It was Murphy who made the gate and led
all the way from Hoppo with Busby holding off Fleming for 3rd.
HALF TIME SCORE:Australia 41 Wales 48
Heat 10 got as far as turn 1 where Herd crashed heavily but all
4 riders were called back. The restart saw Murphy make the gate
and lead from Herd with Hoppo 3rd from R Jones.Going into turn
1 on lap 2 Herd moved inside Murphy and held on for the win with
Hoppo holding onto 3rd ahead of R Jones who had fallen coming
out of the pits bend on lap 3 and remounted.Heat 11 saw Pudney
blast out from gate 4 and lead all the way with Hughes and White
combining to keep Greenhalch at the back.Heat 12 saw Wales make
a reserve change with Evans replacing R Jones.Toye mad ethe gate
and led from Busby and Evans with M Gentle at the back.Going into
turn 1 on lap 2 Toye nudged Busby over to the fence, causing the
Welsh rider to crash. The race was stopped and Toye was excluded
as he was deemed to have used excessive force on Busby. The restart
saw Evans make the gate and lead all the way from M Gentle and
Busby.Heat 14 saw Winwood make the gate and lead allt he way from
B Gentle with Herd 3rd after passing K Jones exiting turn 2.Heat
14 saw Murphy and White make the gate and stay ahead of Greenhalch
and Fleming.Heat 15 saw Pudney bolt from gate 4 and lead from
Evans,Hoppo and Hughes.Going into turn 1 on lap 2 Hoppo and Evans
collided and fell and the race was called back with all 4 riders. The
restart saw Pudney make the gate again from 4 and lead all the
way from Evans with Hughes 3rd after taking advantage of Hoppo
slipping on the exit of the pits bend.Heat 16 saw Toye and Winwood
make the gate but going into turn 1 they drifted out far enough
for B Gentle to nip up the inside and go on to win the race.Meanwhile
Winwood got round Toye for 2nd and R Jones did likewise for 3rd
as the riders exited the pits bend. This now meant that Wales just
needed 3 points from the last 2 races to clinch victory.Heat 17
saw Australia replace M Gentle with Fleming.Busby gated round
Greenhalch and led all the way.Fleming got ahead of Hughes going
into turn 3 but Hughes returned the compliment 1 lap later.Going
into turn 1 on lap 3 Greenhalch moved Hughes over far enough for
Fleming to go through for 2nd with Hughes 3rd after going inside
Greenhalch at the start of the final lap.The 6-4 to Wales meant
that they couldn't be caught.Heat 18 saw Pudney shoot out from
gate 3 and lead all the way to complete a superb maximum as K
Jones and White combined to keep Herd at the back

Sunday 27 February:Australia v Great
Britain Junior Test No 1
This year was the 10th anniversary of the Junior Test series, the
first series having been held in Great Britain during the Australian
Juniors 1995 tour. The Australians won that series by 4 matches
to 1.The next 2 series were both in Australia during the 1997
and 2001 British Lions tours to Australia,Great Britain winning
by 3 matches to 2 in 1997 and Australia doing likewise in 2001.
So to the first match of the 2005 series and the Findon track
was well prepared and suitably dressed up for the occasion and
after the photoshoots, the parade of riders and the playing of
the National Anthems had taken place the coin toss for gates followed
and this was won by Great Britain captain Daniel Pike who opted
for gates 1 and 3 for heat 1
Heat 1 saw Pike and Nick Myhill gate ahead of Josh Ison and Peter
Savage with the latter 2 riders switching places going along the
back straight.Going into turn 3 on lap 2 Ison slid off but remounted.Pike
and Myhill switched places on the run-in to the line,Myhill winning
from Pike with Savage 3rd and the remounted Ison 4th.Heat 2 saw
Brad Gentle make the gate and lead all the way from Ryan Jones
with Ryan Hughes 3rd after taking advantage of Lennon Spear sliding
off going into turn 3 on lap 3.Heat 3 saw an even break from the
start but going into turn 1 Mitchell Spear shut Gamble down, thus
enabling Chris Eaton to shoot round and go on to take the win
ahead of Edson and M Spear as Gamble trailed in last.Heat 4 saw
Savage make the gate ahead of Myhill with Dave Carmichael holding
off Ben Schumacher for 3rd.Going into turn 1 on lap 2 Myhill moved
inside Savage and went on to win with Carmichael holding off Schumacher
for 3rd.Heat 5 saw Pike blast out from gate 3 and lead all the
way.Behind him Ison got round Bartram for 2nd and stayed there.Hartman
then got ahead of Bartram and held him off until the 3rd bend
on the final lap when the whistle went and Hartman was excluded
for not speeding up having been warned to do so.Pike won the race
ahead of Ison with Bartram awarded 3rd.Heat 6 needed 2 attempts
to get it started. The first attempt got as far as turn 1 where
Edson and Jones tangled and a restart was called. This saw Edson
slip his pedals on the run to turn 1 and Jones moved M Spear over
far enough for Hughes to go through.Edson then powered inside
Jones and M Spear.Going into turn 3 on lap 1 Jones slid off after
clipping Edson then M Spear did the same ajust after getting inside
the fallen Jones. Both Jones and M Spear remounted with the latter
finishing 3rd ahead of Jones.Meanwhile up front Hughes won from
Edson.Heat 7 saw Eaton make the gate and lead initially with the
fight for the other places going on behind him.Going into the
pits bend Savage went rouind Ison and Gamble to move into 2nd.As
the riders started lap 2 Ison and Gamble clashed with Gamble falling
and the race was stopped. The restart, with all 4 riders, saw Eaton
again make the gate and lead all the way.Exiting turn 2 Gamble
and Ison left a gap big enough for Savage to go through for 2nd
with Gamble holding off Ison for 3rd.Heat 8 saw Gentle emerge
in front ahead of Pike,Myhill and L Spear.Going into the pits
turn Pike moved Gentle over to creat a gap for Myhill to go on
to win.Pike then slipped, allowing L Spear to go through and take
2nd.Gentle took 3rd ahead of Pike.Heat 9 saw M Spear gate round
Jones and lead him all the way as Carmichael held off Schumacher
for 3rd.
HALF TIME SCORE:Australia 39 Great Britain 50
Heat 10 saw Bartram outgate Edson and take the lead wtih Hartman
holding off Hughes for 3rd.That's how it stayed until the 3rd
bend on the last lap when Bartram moved across from the outside
and Edson had to take evasive action by going across the inside
edge. The race was stopped at that point and Edson was awarded
the win ahead of Bartram,Hartman and Hughes. The 6-4 to Australia
was their first advantage of the match.Heat 11 saw Gentle gate
round Eaton to take the lead with Gamble holding off L Spear for
3rd.That's how it stayed until lap 3 when L Spear went inside
Gamble exiting turn 2.Gamble fought back but going into turn 3
both riders fell after Gamble had cut across to the inside. The
race was stopped and Gamble was excluded for excessive force on
L Spear. The restart saw Eaton make the gate and lead all the way
from Gentle and L Spear. The resultant 5-4 to Australia meant they
had gained their second and final heat advantage of the match.Heat
12 saw Savage make the gate and lead all the way as behind him
Jones moved Ison over going into turn 1 to create a gap which
Hughes shot through for 2nd behind Savage with Jones holding off
Ison for 3rd.Heat 13 saw M Spear outgate Myhill but the former
crashed on the first turn after a nudge from Pike and a restart
was called. This saw Myhill make the gate and lead all the way.Going
into the pits bend on lap 1 M Spear moved Pike over to create
a gap for Edson to shoot through for 2nd with Pike taking 3rd
from M Spear after passing him going into the pits bend on lap
2.Heat 14 saw Gentle power round from gate 3 and lead all the
way as Gamble and Bartram combined to keep Schumacher at the back.Heat
15 saw Eaton bolt from the gate but L Spear moved across to block
Carmichael and the race was called back. The restart saw Eaton
again bolt out of the start ahead of L Spear as Carmichael got
caught up on the outside allowing Hartman through for 3rd.Eaton
held on to win from L Spear with Carmichael 3rd after passing
Hartman on thei inside going into the last lap.Heat 16 needed
2 attempts to get it startrd. The 1st attempt got as far as turn
1 when Ison was nudged over the inside edge by Myhill and the
race was called back.At the 2nd attempt Myhill gated round Ison
and went on to take the victory and complete an excellent 20 point
maximum.M Spear took 2nd from Ison on the run-in to the line as
Hughes trailed in last..This put GB 12 points to the good and
meant that they just had to stay on their bikes in 1 of the remaining
2 races for victory.Heat 17 needed 4 attempts before it finally
started. The first attempt saw Savage lean on Eaton coming off
the start but Savage fell and Eaton went over the inside edge
and the race was called back. The 2nd attempt got as far as turn
1 when the race was called back again as the referee wasn't happy
with the progress of thre race going round turn 1.The 3rd attempt
again got as far as turn 1,this time Jones went down after clashing
with Gentle. At the 4th attempt Eaton blasted from the gate and
led all the way to complete a magnificent 20 point maximum.Savage
took 2nd with Jones holding off Gentle for 3rd.The resultant 6-4
was enough to ensure the young Brits couldn't be caught.Heat 18
needed 2 attempts to get it started.Firstly there was a false
start due to excessive noise. Then when the race did start Pike
gated round the other 3 riders as Gamble slotted into 2nd.Going
into lap 2 Pike allowed Gamble through but drifted out wide going
into turn 1 allowing Edson and L Spear through.Pike repassed L
Spear on the outside but fell exiting turn 2 allowing the Aussie
back through for 3rd.Meanwhile Gamble held on to win from Edson
and L Spear with Pike at the back.
So the young Brits got off to a winning start with Myhill and
Eaton superb and good support from the other 6 riders.Australia
were without Joe Clarke and his presence would have meant Australia
would have been a bit stronger. There was an injury concern for
Great Britain though as Ryan Jones was seen riding round on the
victory parade one handed as he appeared to have injured his right
arm.

Sunday 27 February:Australia v Great
Britain Senior Test 1 at Findon
This year would see the seventh staging of this series, all
previous series having been staged in Australia.Great Britain
had won the series in 1981,1985 and 1988 by 7 matches to nil on
each occasion and were heading for another whitewash in 1993 having
won the first 4 matches in a 5 match series. But history was made
in the final match of that series as Australia finally managed
to win that match and defeat the Brits at the 26th attempt, although
the Aussies still lost that series 4 matches to 1.In 1997 Australia
finally managed to capture their first series victory, winning
by 3 matches to 1 with 1 drawn match then in 2001 they retained
the series, winning by 3 matches to 2 on this occasion.
So the stage was set for the 2005 renewal of this series and 2
of the Australian riders,Mitchell Spear and Peter Savage, would
be doubling up in this match, having already ridden in the earlier
Junior match. The coin toss for gates was won by Australian captain
Matt Gentle who elected to put Australia on gates 1 and 3 in heat
1
Heat 1 saw the Brits make a reserve change as Mike Morgans came
in for Pete Young. The race needed 4 attempts before it got underway. The
first attempt got as far as turn 1 when Gentle fell after Morgans
cut across him and a restart was called for with all 4 riders. This
saw Hemsley power round from gate 4 with Jack Spear slotting into
2nd and Morgans holding off Gentle for 3rd.The race was then stopped
and Morgans was excluded for use of leg on Gentle on the pits
turn on lap 2.The 3rd attempt got as far as turn 1 when Gentle
impeded Hemsley and the race was called back once again. At the
4th attempt Spear made the gate and led all the way with Hemsley
passing Gentle on the inside exiting turn 2.Heat 2 saw Adam Peck
make full use of Gate 1,shooting out and leading all the way with
Jason Jesson and Daniel Pudney combining to keep Terry Norman
at the back for a shared heat. That was to be the only defeat for
Pudney in the match.Heat 3 saw GB captain Lee Aris make the gate
but Lowey powered round to take the lead going into the 3rd bend. The
Poole rider held on to win as Aris held off Tony Herd and Mitchell
Spear for a GB 7-3 to put them 1 point up.Heat 4 needed 3 attempts
before it finally got underway. The first attempt got as far as
turn 1 when Gentle went down after a clash of bikes and a re-run
was called for with all 4 riders. The 2nd attempt also got as far
as turn 1 when Pete Young, having his first ride of the match, was
forced over the inside edge and the race was called back and re-run
with all 4.At the 3rd attempt Young stormed from the gate and
led all the way with Morgans holding off Neil Toye for 2nd.Gentle
failed to finish the race as his crank arm had snapped off just
as the tapes went up on the 3rd attempt.Heat 5 saw J Spear and
Hemsley gate together but Hemsley stormed round the tall Aussie
going along the back straight and held on for the win as Garry
Pearce held off Peter Savage for 3rd.Heat 6 saw Norman storm out
from gate 1 to lead all the way.Going into turn 1 M Spear moved
Peck over far enough for Herd to go through and take 2nd behind
Norman as M Spear held off Peck for 3rd.Heat 7 saw Lowey make
the gate but Aris got round him going into the 3rd bend and held
on to win with Lowey 2nd ahead of Gentle(on a borrowed bike) and
J Spear.Heat 8 saw Pudney storm from gate 2 and lead all the way
from Young with Hemsley holding off Jesson for 3rd.Heat 9 saw
Morgans storm from gate 2 and lead all the way from Herd with
Toye holding off Norman for 3rd.
HALF TIME SCORE:Australia 38 Great Britain 50
Heat 10 saw M Spear make the gate from gate 2 and lead all the
way from Pearce as Peck held off Savage for 3rd.Heat 11 saw Pudney
make the gate from gate 1 and lead all the way with Lowey powering
round to take 2nd and Aris holding off Jesson for 3rd.heat 12
saw Peck make the gate from gate 1 and lead all the way from Gentle
with Norman holding off J Spear for 3rd.heat 13 saw Hemsley get
a good start and lead all the way from M Spear with Herd passing
Young for 3rd as the riders started lap 2.Heat 14 saw Pearce amke
use of gate 1 and lead all the way with Aris taking 2nd after
taking advantage of Jesson drifting wide exiting turn 2.Toye took
3rd after passing Jesson going into the pits bend.Heat 15 saw
Pudney make the gate with Morgans slotting into 2nd ahead of Savage
and Lowey.Going into lap 2 Morgans gave Savage a nudge which saw
both riders cross theinside edge. The race was stopped and all
4 riders were called back. The restart saw Pudney make the gate
and lead all the way as Lowey and Morgans combined to keep Savage
at the back. This put Great Britain 18 points to the good and they
just needed 4 points from the last 3 races to ensure victory.Heat
16 saw Young make use of his 2nd gate 1 to lead all the way from
J Spear with Peck holding off Herd for 3rd for a 6-4 to GB which
meant that they couldn't be caught.Heat 17 saw a reserve change
for Australia as Savage replaced Jesson. After an even break from
the start Norman emerged in front ahead of Savage and Gentle with
Lowey at the back.Going into the pits bend Savage fell after clipping
Norman who was passed on the inside by Gentle who went on to win
the race ahead of Norman and Lowey with Savage remounting for
4th.The final heat saw Pudney emerge in front ahear of Hemsley
and M Spear with Aris at the back after tangling with the former.Going
into the pit bend M Spear challenged Hemsley on the inside and
the 2 riders were leaning on each other until turn 1 on lap 2
when Hemsley stuck his leg across M Spear's rear wheel and caused
him to fall. The race was stopped and Hemsley would have to watch
the race from the pits having been excluded. The restart got as
far as turn 1 when Aris and M Spear tangled and another restart
was called. At the 3rd attempt Pudney made the gate and led all
the way with Aris hoilding off M Spear who clipped Aris' wheel
exiting turn 2 on lap 3 and fell.Aris took 2nd as M Spear remounted
for 3rd.
For the Brits every rider won at least one race and there was
solid scoring throughout whilst for Australia Pudney was superb, dropping
only 1 point, whilst 14 year old Mitchell Spear showed potential
and there was some spirited resistance from Mitchell's brother
Jack as well as Herd and Gentle.

Monday 28 February:Great Britain v
Australia Junior Test No 2 at Salisbury
Both teams made changes for this match. For Australia Ben Schumacher
and David Hartman made way for Daniel Thompson and Troy Cowell. For
Great Britain Ryan Jones, who had an arm injury, and Ryan Hughes, who
was in Melbourne, were replaced by Keiron Jones(younger brother
of Ryan) and Nicky Evans.Great Britain would be the "Home"
team for this match.
Heat 1 saw Daniel Pike power round from gate 4 and lead all the
way from initially Mitchell Spear,Nick Myhill and Josh Ison.Going
into lap 2 M Spear slowed Myhill enough for Ison to power round
and take 2nd behind Pike with M Spear 3rd ahead of Myhill.heat
2 saw Nicky Evans make the gate but Ryan Bartram and Peter Savage
tabgled going into turn 1 and the race was called back. After an
even break from the start L Spear powered round Evans going along
the back straight and went on to take the win as behind him and
Evans Bartram passed Savage for 3rd going into the first turn
on lap 2 but Savage repassed Bartram on the inside going into
the pits bend on lap 3.Heat 3 saw Brad Gentle make the gate and
lead from Simon Gamble with Chris Eaton holding off Ryan Edson
for 3rd.Going into turn 2 on lap 2 Gamble moved inside Gentle
to take the lead and go on to win from Gentle with Eaton holding
off Edson for 3rd.Heat 4 needed 3 attempts before it finally started. The
1st attempt got as far as turn 1 where M Spear and David Carmichael
went over the inside edge and the race was stopped with all 4
put back in.The 2nd attempt saw Carmichael emerge from turn 2
in front as Daniel Thompson took advantage of M Spear moving Pike
over to move into 2nd.Pike then powered inside the 2 Australians
but going into the pits bend he fell but he was assisted by a
Thompson leg.The race was stopped and Thompson was excludsed. At
the 3rd attempt Pike gated round M Spear and lead all the way
with Carmichael 3rd.Heat 5 saw Myhill power round from gate 4
and lead all the way from Troy Cowell with Ison 3rd after powering
round the outside of Kieran Jones going into lap 3.Heat 6 saw
Eaton and Savage gate together but the former emerged in front
exiting turn 2 and held on for the win ahead of Savage with L
Spear passing Gamble for 3rd on the inside going into the pits
bend on lap 1.Heat 7 saw Pike and Myhill outgate the 2 Australians
Gentle and Edson and lead them all the way to put Great Britain
into a 7 point lead.Heat 8 saw a reserve change for GB as Jones
replaced Bartram. The race needed 3 attempts before it finally
started. At the first attempt Evans made the gate but the race
was stopped after M Spear and Jones had clashed and fell on the
first turn. The 2nd attempt saw Evans again make the gate ahead
of M Spear with Jones and Ison neck and neck going along the back
straight.Going into the pits bend Jones went for an inside pass
on Ison but as he did so the whistle went and Jones was harshly
excluded for apparently crossing the inside line.At the 3rd attempt
Evans made the gate and led all the way from Ison and M Spear.Heat
9 needed 2 attempts to get it started.Firstly Savage and Gamble
gated together but Carmichael and Thompson tangled and fell, necessitating
a restart.This saw Savage lead from Gamble,Thompson and Carmichael.Going
into lap 3 Thompson moved inside Gamble and Carmichael shot through
the gap created to take 2nd behind Savage.Gamble and Thompson
then fought it out for 3rd with Thompson powering round the outside
going along the back straight but the 2 riders tangled going into
the pits bend and fell with Thompson recovering the quickest to
take 3rd from Gamble.
HALF TIME SCORE:Great Britain 46 Australia 42.
Heat 10 saw Eaton make the gate and lead from L Spear with Jones
holding off Cowell for 3rd.That was how it stayed until Cowell
went round the outside of Jones going into the last lap.Up front
Eaton held on to win from L Spear with Cowell 3rd from Jones.Apparently
Eaton and L Spear exchanged words on the track after the race
had finished and this spilled over into a commotion in the pits. This
distracted the Great Britain side and as a result Evans and Bartram
were excluded from heat 11 for not making the rest line within
the required 1 minute.Edson and Gentle therefore rode 1 lap only
for a 7-0 to put Australia 3 points up at 54-51.Heat 12 saw Great
Britain strike back with the Pike-Myhill pairing taking a maximum
7-3 over Savage and L Spear to put GB 1 point ahead.Heat 13 saw
an even break from the start but exiting turn 2 Gamble emerged
in front ahead of M Spear,Eaton and Ison. That is how the race
finished as the 6-4 to GB put them 3 points ahead.Heat 14 needed
4 attempts before it got started. At the first attempt Bartram
and Gentle made the gate ahead of Carmichael and Cowell. It stayed
like that until the pits bend when the whistle went to stop the
race but the riders didn't realise that the whistle had gone and
continued racing. It was a full lap before a 2nd whistle brought
the riders to a halt. The 2nd attempt saw Bartram and Gentle gate
together again but their momentum carried them out towards the
fence and the race was stopped once again. The 3rd attempt got
as far as turn 1 where Bartram went over the inside edge and the
race was called to a halt for the 3rd time.At the 4th attempt
Bartram gated and led all the way from Gentle with Cowell 3rd
after passing Carmichael going into the pits bend on the first
lap.Heat 15 needed 3 attempts before it started.The 1st attempt
saw Evans make the gate and lead from Edson,Thompson and Jones. That
was how it stayed until the pits bend on lap 3 when Jones fell
after clipping Thompson. The race was stopped and Thompson was
excluded for not speeding up having been warned to do so.The 2nd
attempt saw Evans get tangled up with Edson coming out of the
start and another restart was called. At the 3rd attempt Evans
led from Edson and Jones but going into turn 1 on lap 3 Edson
nudged Evand who skidded and dropped back to 3rd as Edson took
the win ahead of Jones.Heat 16 also needed 3 attempts to get it
started. The 1st 2 attempts saw Myhill and M Spear gate togethet
but each time Myhill was nudged over the inside edge and a restart
was called each time.At the 3rd attempt myhill made the gate and
led all the way as the Spear cousins combined to keep Gamble at
the back.Heat 17 needed 2 attempts to get it started. At the first
attempt Savage made the gate and led from Pike,Bartram and Edson.Exiting
the pits bend Savage forced Pike over the outside edge and the
whistle went to stop the race. The restart, without the excluded
Savage, saw Pike gate round from gate 4 and lead all the way to
complete a splendid maximum with Bartram
holding off Edson for 2nd until Edson powered inside Bartram
going into the pits bend and he stayed there for 2nd.The 6-3 to
GB put them 7 points ahead and it meant that Evans or Eaton just
needed to finish heat 18 to clinch victory to GB.The race needed
3
attempts to get it started. The 1st attempt saw both Brits make
the gate but the race was stopped after a tangle on the 1st bend. The
2nd attempt got as far as turn 1 where Eaton was nudged over the
inside edge by Gentle. At the 3rd attempt Evans made the gate and
led all the way with Eaton holding off Ison and Gentle trailing
in last.

Wednesday 2 March:Australia v Great
Britain Junior Test No 3 at Le Fevre
The task for Great Britain in this match was simple:win it
and the series was theirs. From the previous match at Salisbury
Australia would be unchanged for this match whereas Great Britain
made 2 changes.Keiron Jones made way for brother Ryan(who had
recovered from his arm injury) and Chris Davies came in for Simon
Gamble. The coin toss for gate positions was won by Australian
captain Josh Ison who opted to put Austraila on gates 1 and 3
in heat 1.
Heat 1 didn't get off the start line at first as Mitchell Spear
twitched at the tapes and was sent back to the pits by referee
Bob Osborne. When the riders did get off the start line Daniel
Pike gated round Josh Ison and led all the way with Nick Myhill
passing Ison for 2nd exiting turn 2 for a 7-2 to GB.Heat 2 saw
an even break from the start but exiting turn 2 Ryan Jones emerged
in front.Nicky Evans then got round going itno the pits bend and
at the same time Peter Savage mounted a challenge on Jones but
fell.Evans and Jones went on to record GB's second 1-2 finish
in as many races as they finished ahead of Lennon Spear and the
remounted Savage.Heat 3 needed 3 attempts to get it started. The
1st attempt got as far as turn 1 before being called back as the
referee wasn't happy with the way the race was progressing. The
2nd attempt didn't even get off the start line as Chris Eaton
twitched whilst under orders and was sent back to the pits.At
the 3rd attempt Dave Carmichael and Brad Gentle gated together
but going into turn 1 Gentle held up Carmichael enough to enable
Ryan Edson to go through and win.Behind Edson,Gentle and Carmichael
had a good battle with Carmichael getting into 2nd at the start
of lap 2 but then falling on the pits bend which enabled Gentle
to take 2nd as Carmichael remounted for 3rd.Heat 4 saw Myhill
make the gate but the race was called back due to the referee
not being happy with the progress of the race going round turn
1.The restart saw Myhill and M Spear gate together but the latter
fell exiting turn 2.This left Myhill in front of Chris Davies
and Daniel Thompson but going into turn 1 on lap 2 Thompson went
inside Davies for 2nd behind Myhill with Davies holding on to
3rd ahead of the remounted M Spear.Heat 5 saw Pike and Ryan Bartram
make the gate ahead of Troy Cowell and Ison.Going into the pits
bend Bartram went round Pike and went on to win as Pike held off
Cowell for 3rd with Ison 4th after falling going into turn 1 on
lap 3.Heat 6 saw Evans make the gate and lead from Gentle.Going
into the pits bend Gentle drifted wide and Jones and Edson were
through for 2nd and 3rd.Going into turn 1 on lap 2 Jones went
down after clashing with Ison and the race was stopped.Referee
Osborne decided that that was a racing incident so he put all
4 back in.The restart saw Evans again make the gate and lead all
the way.Going into turn 1 on lap 2 Jones,Edson and Gentle went
in together with Edson emerging out of turn 2 ahead of Jones and
Gentle.Going into pits bend on lap 3 Edson slowed Jones sufficiently
to enable Gentle to go up the inside for 2nd behind Evans with
Edson holding off Jones for 3rd.Heat 7 saw M Spear make the gate
but he impeded Eaton on the run to turn 1 so the race was called
back. The restart saw Eaton make amends for his tapes exclusion
in heat 3 by making the gate and leading all the way with M Spear
emerging from turn 2 in 2nd with Carmichael taking 3rd after going
inside Ison.Heat 8 saw GB's big 2 Pike and Myhill make the gate
and lead all the way from Savage and L Spear.Heat 9 saw Gentle
make the gate and hold up Jones and Davies enough to enable Thompson
to go up the inside and on for victory.Jones and Davies took 2nd
and 3rd after Gentle slipped his pedals exiting turn 2.
HALF TIME SCORE:Australia 36 Great Britain 52.
The second half opened with Evans making the gate and leading
all the way.Cowell initially held 2nd ahead of Bartram and Edson
but going into turn 2 on lap 2 Edson moved inside Bartram for
3rd.1 lap later Cowell tried an inside move on Evans but fell, allowing
Edson and Bartram through for 2nd and 3rd as Cowell failed
to finish with what appeared to this scribe to be a bent front
wheel.Heat 11 saw Savage make the gate ahead of Eaton,L Spear
and Carmichael. That's how it stayed until the riders exited turn
2 on the last lap when Eaton clipped Savage's wheel and fell, allowing
L Spear through for 2nd behind Savage as Carmichael took 3rd and
Eaton remounted for 4th.Heat 12 saw Australia make a reserve change
as Cowell replaced Ison.Evans made the gate and led from M Spear,Cowell
and Jones.Exiting the pits bend M Spear was moved over by Evans
and this allowed Cowell to go through for 2nd as M Spear dropped
back to 3rd to challenge Jones.Going along the back straight Jones
appeared to kick out at M Spear but going into the pits bend the
latter's foot got caught in Jones's bike and both riders fell. The
race was stopped and Jones was excluded as being the cause of
the stoppage. The restart saw Evans again make the gate and lead
from Cowell and M Spear but exiting the pits bend on lap 2 Evans
slid off and the 2 Aussies changed places,M Spear taking the win
from Cowell as Evans remounted for 3rd.Heat 13 didn't get off
the start line at first as Gentle moved while under orders and
was excluded.Pike and Myhill outgated Edson for a 7-2.Heat 14
saw Bartram make use of gate 1 and lead all the way from Thompson
and L Spear with Carmichael trailing in last.Heat 15 saw Cowell
lead from Eaton,Savage and Davies. That's how it stayed until turn
1 on lap 2 when Eaton and Savage clashed, the former falling.Cowell
and Savage went on to finish 1st and 2nd ahead of Davies and the
remounted Eaton. This result meant that GB were now 11 points up
and to be sure of victory on the night and to wrap up the series
they just needed to avoid getting 7-3's against them in the last
3 races.Heat 16 saw both teams make reserve changes. For Australia
Thompson replaced Gentle and for the Brits Bartram replaced Evans.Myhill
made the gate and led all the way to complete his 2nd unbeaten
performance in 3 matches.Behind him Bartram forced his way into
2nd ahead of Thompson and Ison. The 7-3 to GB meant that the match
on the night and the series were theirs.Heat 17 saw Eaton make
the gate ahead of the Spear cousins and Jones. That's how it stayed
until the back straight on lap 3 when the whistle went after L
Spear had gone over the outside edge and was excluded.Eaton was
awarded the race ahead of M Spear and Jones.Heat 18 needed 2 attempts
to get it started.Firstly Savage was nudges by Pike as the riders
left the tapes,Savage falling as a result and the race was called
back. The 2nd attempt saw Pike make the gate and lead all the way
from Savage to complete his 2nd successive unbeaten performance
with Edson taking 3rd after going inside Carmichael going into
the pits bend on lap 2.
So the job was done and Great Britain recaptured the Junior Ashes
having last won them in 1997 in the first series held in Australia.Pike
and Myhill both recorded maximums and the performances of Carmichael,Davies
and especially Evans were the deciding factors in this match.

Wednesday 2 March:Great Britain v Australia
Senior Test No 2 at Le Fevre
Both teams made one change for this match with Garry Pearce
making way for Richard Williamson for Great Britain and Brad Hoppo
coming in for Peter Savage for the Aussies. The stage was set for
what would turn out to be the most remarkable match of all the
previous Australia-Great Britain meetings. The coin toss for gates
was won by Australian captain Matt Gentle who put Australia on
gates 1 and 3 for heat 1.
Heat 1 needed 3 attempts before it finally started. The 1st attempt
didnt get off the start line as Adam Peck twitched whilst under
orders and was excluded.the 2nd attempt got as far as turn 1 but
was called back following a clash of bikes going into turn 1.The
3rd attempt saw an even break from the start but Jack Spear emerged
in front going along the back straight and went on to win with
Dave Hemsley going inside Gentle for 2nd going into the pits bend.Heat
2 also needed 3 attempts to get it started. The 1st attempt was
declared a false start due to excessive noise. The 2nd attempt
saw Aaron Lowey and Daniel Pudney gate together but exiting turn
2 they left a gap big enough for Lee Aris and Brad Hoppo to go
up the inside.Going into the 3rd turn Aris went down after a challenge
by Hoppo. The whistle went to stop the race and Aris was harshly
excluded as being the cause of the stoppage. The restart saw Pudney
outgate Lowey to take the lead and Hoppo went round Lowey going
into the pits bend then went round Pudney and on to take the win
as Pudney held off Lowey for 2nd for a 7-2 to Australia to put
them 8 points up.Heat 3 saw Mitchell Spear and Terry Norman make
the gate together ahead of Tony Herd and Mike Morgans. That's how
it stayed until the run-in to the finish when Norman powered up
the inside of M Spear exiting the pits bend and pipped him on
the line.Heat 4 saw Hemsley make the gate from gate 1 and lead
all the way from J Spear as behind them Neil tToye and Richard
Williamson had a good battle with Williamson getting ahead from
the start but Toye got ahead going into lap 2 and stayed there
until the pits bend on the last lap when he fell and left Williamson
with nowhere to go.Toye then prevented Williamson from retrieving
his bike(an excludable offence in the mind of this scribe) but
he was awarded 3rd with Williamson placed 4th.Heat 5 saw Gentle
make the gate and lead all the way from Peck and Pete Young with
Jason Jesson last after tangling with Young exiting turn 2.Heat
6 saw disaster for GB as firstly Norman was excluded for moving
at the tapes, then Morgans did likewise.Hoppo and Pudney rode 1
lap for a 7-0 to put Australia 15 points ahead at 35-20 with GB
seemingly dead and buried. The Great Britain fightback started
immediately in heat 7 as Hemsley and Peck outgated M Spear and
Herd to take a big 7-3 and cut Australia's lead to 11 points.Heat
8 needed 2 attempts to get it started. The first attempt didn't
get off the start line as Gentle clearly moved whilst under orders
and was excluded. The 2nd attempt saw Lowey and Aris outgate J
Spear and lead the tall Aussie all the way for what they believed
to be a 7-2 for GB but that was turned into a 7-0 by the exclusion
of J Spear who went over the outside edge on the last lap.The
gap had been reduced form 15 points down to 4 in the matter of
2 races.Heat 9 saw Pudney make the gate but Toye
went down after clipping Norman on the run to turn 1 and the
race was stopped. The restart saw Pudney make the gate and lead
all the way from Norman with Williamson holding off Toye for 3rd.
HALF TIME SCORE:Great Britain 39 Australia 43.
Heat 10 saw Young make the gate and lead all the way as Morgans
forced his way into 2nd ahead of Hoppo and Jesson. The 7-3 to GB
meant that the scores were now level.Heat 11 saw Aris make the
gate and lead all the way from M Spear and Herd with Lowey 4th
after clipping M Spear going into the pits bend on lap 1.Heat
12 saw Pudney gate round Hemsley to take the lead as Peck held
off Hoppo for 3rd.That's how it stayed until the exit of turn
2 on the last lap when Pudney suddenly changed his line and impeded
Hemsley in the process. The whistle went to stop the race and Pudney
was excluded with Hemsley awarded the win of the race ahead of
Peck and Hoppo. The 7-2 to GB meant they had taken the lead for
the 1st time in the match.Heat 13 needed 3 attempts to get it
started. The 1st attempt saw Norman and Gentle gate together ahead
of Morgans and J Spear.Going into the pits bend Gentle and Morgans
clashed and fell. The race was stopped and all 4 were called back. The
2nd attempt saw Gentle make the gate but going into turn 1 J Spear
went down after a clash of bikes and the race was stopped once
again. At the 3rd attempt Gentle made the gate and led from Morgans,Norman
and J Spear.Going into turn 1 on lap 2 Morgans went down after
clashing with Gentle who went on to win the race ahead of Norman
and J Spear as Morgans remounted for 4th.The 6-4 to Australia
cut GB's lead to 3 points.Heat 14 saw Lowey make the gate and
lead all the way from Jesson with M Spear holding off Williamson(who
fell exiting the pits bend on lap 2 and remounted) for 3rd.Heat
15 needed 3 attempts to get it started.The 1st 2 attempts saw
Toye nudged over the inside edge by Aris on the run to turn 1
each time.At the 3rd attempt Young gated round everyone to lead
all the way with Aris slotting into 2nd ahead of Herd and Toye
was trailed off at the back for a GB 7-3 to put them 7 up.Heat
16 saw Peck blast from gate 3 and lead with Norman forcing his
way into 2nd exiting turn 1 but falling after clashing with J
Spear. The whistle went to stop the race and all 4 were put back
in.The restart saw Norman lead initially from J Spear but Peck
got round both of them to take the lead going into turn 3 and
he went on to win with Norman 2nd ahead of Hoppo and J Spear for
a 7-3 to GB which put them 11 points ahead meaning that they just
had to get 4 points from the last 2 races to take a remarkable
win.Heat 17 saw Australia make a reserve change as Jesson replaced
Herd.Pudney made the gate and led all the way from Hemsley and
Lowey with Jesson at the back for a shared heat which was enough
for GB to clinch a remarkable win and also wrap up the series. The
final race saw GB make a reserve change with Williamson replacing
Morgans.Aris made the gate and led all the way from M Spear with
Williamson holding 3rd from Gentle but the Aussie captain took
3rd from Williamson with an inside pass exiting turn 2.
So a remarkable match which saw a tremendous fightback from Great
Britain after going 15 points behind after 6 races.Apart from
their respective exclusions neither Aris nor Pudney were beaten
by an opponent. It was Great Britain's team spirit that saw them
refuse to lose with team manager Steve Harris surely deserving
credit for keeping the riders going when all seemed lost after
the first 6 races.

bend.The 6-4 to Australia put them 1 point up at 85-84.Heat 18

powered round going along the back straight.Going iton the pits

for a restart which was stopped on the 3rd lap after Myhill went

the pits for moving at the tapes. The 4th attempt finally saw the

Edson went for an inside pass on the back straight but was forced
onto the centre green by Hunt who was excluded for excessive force

17 was the heat which ultimately decided the whole match. After
a false start due to excessive noise,M Spear led all the way with

inside move on the Australian but clipped his wheel and fell, allowing
Savage through for 2nd with Hunt 3rd and Myhill remounting for

Saturday 5 March:Senior World Cup at
Findon
The question everyone was asking themselves before the match
started was:Could England continue their virtual domination of
this competition? They had won it on every single occasion bar
1999,when Poland were the winners.The next 26 races(Including
the run-off,a first for this competition) would provide the answer.
This match was without doubt the best of the whole tour with the
action coming thick and fast. The biggest selection surprise was
by Australia who decided to include veteran Neil Toye instead
of Tony Herd,a move that severely displeased Herd and led to England's
Barmy Army chanting "Steve Clarke,Where's Tony?" during
the course of the match. The England team showed 3 changes from
the team which had won at Astley & Tyldesley by 1 point in
2003.Shaun Woodhouse,Gavin Wheeler(who was 2nd in the final race
which was enough in 2003) and Darren Slater did not make the trip
down under(the latter 2 riders were selected to tour but both
pulled out).Aaron Lowey,Adam Peck and Terry Norman were selected
to race alongside Lee Aris and Dave Hemsley. For Norman,it was
just reward after missing out in 2003.2 riders would be doubling
up by riding this match as well as having ridden in the previous
Junior match,Australia's Mitchell Spear and Ryan Jones for Wales.
Heat 1 needed 3 attempts before it finally started. At the first
attempt Mitchell Soear led from Pawel Kozlowski but Richard Hunt
and Paul White collided on the pits bend and the race was stopped. The
restart got as far as the first bend when Mitchell Spear and White
collided and the race was called back again. At the 3rd attempt
Mitchell Spear led all the way from Kozlowski and Hunt with White
last after clipping Hunt on the back straight on the first lap.Heat
2 also needed 3 attempts to get it started. At the first attempt
Aaron Lowey was away from gate 1 like a rocket but the race was
stopped after Jack Spear collided with Lukasz Nowacki. The second
attempt saw Lowey again lead the way from gate 1 as Nowacki got
into 2nd going down the back straight but then went down after
a challenge by Jack Spear with Ryan Jones having nowhere to go
as the race was called back once again. In the mind of this scribe
the Pole was lucky he wasn't excluded. The race started at the
3rd attempt as Lowey again led from gate 1 as Jack Spear finished
ahead of Jones with Nowacki falling from 3rd place on the 3rd
bend of lap 3.Heat 3 saw Pete Young make use of his first gate
1 to record Scotland's first win of the night, heading home Terry
Norman,Matt Gentle and Dave Murphy.Heat 4 saw the first reserve
change of the match as Australia replaced Neil Toye with Daniel
Pudney. It was Marcin Szwajorek who led the race all the way from
Dave Hemsley,Pudney and Elliott Jones.on the last lap Elliott
Jones tried a move up the inside but fell after clipping Hemsley
and that left Pudney with nowhere to go.Both riders then started
to trade punches and had to be separated. The race was stopped
and awarded with Szwajorek the winner from Hemsley as Pudney was
placed 3rd and Elliott Jones excluded for causing the stoppage. In
the mind of this scribe both Pudney and Elliott Jones were lucky
not to be match banned for their fisticuffs.Heat 5 saw Karol Szymanski
blast from gate 4 to lead all the way as Lee Aris got round Mark
Winwood and Craig Newsome on the first turn.
AFTER 5 HEATS:England 13 Poland 12 Australia 11 Scotland
10 Wales 6
The 2nd round of races began with Nowacki making use of his gate
1 to lead heat 6 all the way from Young,Hemsley and White.Heat
7 saw England make what would be their only reserve change of
the night as Adam Peck came in for Aris.Australia also made a
change as Pudney replaced M Spear. After some bumping on the first
turn,it was Pudney who emerged in front from Elliott Jones,Ryan
Jones and Peck. The former moved into 2nd on the top bend of the
last lap after Elliott Jones slid off and Peck ploughed into him. Both
riders remounted with Elliott Jones 3rd (he was lucky not to be
excluded in the mind of this scribe) and Peck last.Heat 8 saw
Murphy make use of his grid 1 to take the first race win for Wales
ahead of Szwajorek with Newsome 3rd after passing J Spear on the
pits bend of the first lap.Heat 9 saw Lowey inflict Szymanski's
first defeat of the night by heading the Pole home as Gentle and
Hunt collided on the pits bend during the closing stages of the
race. Both riders remounted with Gentle crossing the line ahead
of Hunt.Heat 10 saw Toye,in his first race of the night, make use
of his gate 1 to lead all the way.Norman was 2nd put was passed
by Kozlowski on the back straight on lap 1 and was then relegated
to last by Winwood who got under him on the pits bend on lap 2.
AFTER 10 HEATS:Poland 25 Australia 22 England 21 Wales
16 Scotland 15
Heat 11 opened the 3rd round of races with Hemsley rocketing
from gate 1 to inflict Szymanski's 2nd defeat of the night with
Murphy 3rd from M Spear.Aris bolted from gate 2 to win heat 12
with J Spear 2nd after rounding Kozlowski coming out of the 2nd
bend as Young was at the back. This put England 1 point behind
Poland.Heat 13 saw Wales make a reserve change as Allan Busby
came in for Winwood. The race needed 2 attempts for it to get underway. The
first attempt didn't even get off the start as Nowacki moved at
the start and was sent back to the pits.Busby then blasted out
of the gate to lead all the way as Gentle slipped his pedals at
the start which allowed Elliott Jones to nip into 2nd but the
Australian took 2nd from the Scot on the pits turn on lap 3.Australia
brought in Pudney for Toye in heat 14 in a race that needed 4
attempts to get it going.Firstly Pudney shot from gate 2 but the
race was recalled after Newsome clipped Pudney's rear wheel and
crashed. After 2 further tangles going into the first bend the
race finally got underway with Pudney gating to win from Lowey
with White getting inside Newsome for 3rd place coming out of
the second bend. This put Australia into the lead,1 point ahead
of England.Szymanski rocketed from gate 3 to take heat 15 ahead
of Norman as Hunt got round Ryan Jones for 3rd place.
AFTER 15 HEATS:England 35 Poland 34 Australia 33 Wales
25 Scotland 21
Heat 16 opened the 4th round of races with Poland making a reserve
change, bringing in Tomasz Wlodarczyk for Kozlowski. The race got
as far as the 1st turn when Elliott Jones went down and Murphy
ploughed into him. With all 4 back in for a restart, this was called
back after Elliott Jones and Wlodarczyk collided coming out of
the start. At the 3rd attempt the Pole led from the gate but Lowey
powered round him coming out of turn 2 and held on to win with
Murphy 3rd ahead of Elliott Jones.Heat 17 saw Norman make use
of his grid 1,rocketing out to win from Nowacki with M Spear 3rd
after passing Newsome on the back straight on lap 2.Heat 18 had
hardly started when J Spear was forced onto the centre green by
Hemsley. With all 4 back in for a restart,Hemsley got an absolute
flyer from 2 but he was deemed to be moving before the tapes went
up and was controversially excluded.J Spear then made use of his
grid 1 to take thw win from Hunt and Winwood.Heat 19 saw White
and Gentle gate in front but Aris spotted a gap on the inside
coming out of turn 2 and was through and away for the win.Gentle
got round White for 2nd at the end of lap 1 as Szwajorek trailed
in last.Szymanski made use of his grid 1 in heat 20,rocketing
out to win from Toye as Ryan Jones held off Young for 3rd.
AFTER 20 HEATS:England 47 Poland 45 Australia 45 Wales
43 Scotland 27
The final round of races opened with M Spear making use of his
second grid 1 to win heat 21 ahead of Kozlowski,White and Hunt.Heat
22 saw Australia replace J Spear with Pudney and Wales bring in
Busby for Ryan Jones. It was Nowacki who rocketed from gate 4 to
lead all the way as Lowey was put on the inside kerb going into
turn 1.Pudney got into 2nd but lost his chain on the pits bend
on lap 1 with Lowey and Busby getting through for 2nd and 3rd
with Pudney eventually lapped on the pits bend on the final lap.Heat
23 saw Young make use of his 2nd grid 1 to lead all the way with
Norman holding 2nd until just before the finish when he and Gentle
collided and fell.Murphy nipped through for 2nd as Norman dragged
his bike over the line for 3rd ahead of Gentle. This put the Poles
and England level on 52 points with 2 races each to come with
Australia on 50 with 1 race only left.Heat 24 saw 2 reserve changes,Pudney
for Toye for Australia and Wlodarczyk for Szwajorek for Poland.Pudney
got round Wlodarczyk on the back straight on the 1st lap and held
on to win while the Pole and Hemsley then had a terrific scrap
for 2nd which the Pole just won on the line.Elliott Jones was
last having clipped Hemsley's rear wheel, falling and remounting. This
put Poland on 55 and England on 54 with both countries represented
in the final heat.Australia were also on 54 but were out of races. The
permutations for heat 25 were as follows:If Aris finished 2 places
ahead of Szmanski England would win.If Aris finished 1 place ahead
of Szymanski there would have to be a run-off.If Szymanski finished
ahead of Aris Poland would win.The race lined up with Winwood
on 1,Szymanski on 2,Newsome on 3 and Aris on 4.It was Szymanski
who led initially with Aris getting round Winwood and Newsome
coming out of turn 2 and continually buzzing round the Pole's
rear wheel.Going into the pits bend on lap 3 Szymanski drifted
to the outside of the track and Aris didn't need a second invitation
to move into the lead which he held onto as the England supporters
went crazy.Winwood and Newsome were merely spectators in this
one. This meant that England and Poland were level on 58 points
each and for the first time in the history of the World Cup,a
run-off would be required to decide the match. For the run-off,England
chose Aris and Poland opted for Nowacki. After winning the toss
and choosing gate 2,Aris rode a perfect race, keeping Nowacki where
he could see him for the whole 4 laps.As Aris crossed the line
with his arms aloft the England supporters on the 2nd bend jumped
onto the track to celebrate with him(this scribe included). It
was rumoured that this was the last World Cup appearance for Dave
Hemsley-if that was the case then he signed off in style with
his 6th winners medal.

Masters at Findon
The action started with a 3-rider race in heat 1 with Ian
Taylor leading all the way from Martin Gamble as Steve Jarman
trailed in 3rd.John Murphy led Dave Murphy for almost the whole
race in heat 2,Dave Murphy getting up to win on the line as Mick
Aris held off Colin Simmons for 3rd.Heat 3 saw Fred Rothwell lead
all the way from gate 4 from Steve Clarke as Alan Teague took
3rd from James Williams on the line.Heat 4 saw Allan Busby lead
all the way from gate 2 but all the action was going on behind
him as Nigel Greenhalgh,Mick Pedley and Rick Jolly fought it out
with the battle being resolved on the final bend as Greenhalgh, who
held 2nd for most of the race, was nudged by Pedley going into
the last bend and this allowed Jolly through for 2nd.Pedley then
held off Greenhalgh for 3rd.
Pedley faced a second straight race in heat 5 but he led it all
the way from his second gate 1 from John Murphy,Teague and Jarman.Heat
6 saw Busby become the second straight winner from gate 1 as he
led all the way from Taylor as Simmons got by Williams for 3rd
place on the pits bend on lap 2.In heat 7 Rothwell and Greenhalgh
collided on the 1st turn and the race was called back.Rothwell
made no mistake in the re-run,becoming the 3rd straight winner
from gate 1 as Aris,Gamble and Greenhalch finished in that order.Heat
8 was a 3-rider race, won by Dave Murphy who led all the way from
gate 2 as Clarke passed Jolly for 2nd on the 3rd bend on the last
lap. After 2 rides each Dave Murphy,Rothwell and Busby were unbeaten
on 8 points each as 6 points separated all 15 riders.
Rothwell kept his unbeaten run going by leading heat 9 all the
way from Simmons,Jolly and Jarman.Heat 10 was a good one as John
Murphy led for 1 lap but was passed by Greenhalgh going into lap
2 then Taylor got through on the 1st turn of lap 2 as John was
relegated to the back by Clarke who then drifted wide on the top
bend of lap 3 to allow john back through for 3rd.Heat 11 saw Dave
Murphy lead the way from gate 3 but going into the 1st bend on
lap 2 Busby nudged his fellow Welshman and fall. The race was stopped
and restarted with Dave Murphy again lead the way from gate 3
as Busby moved inside Gamble at the end of lap 1.Meanwhile Teague
failed to finish after clipping Gamble's wheel going into the
first turn and falling.Heat 12 was a 3 rider race which saw Aris
make use of his 1st gate 1 to lead all the way.Pedley held 2nd
for most of the race but fell on the pits bend on the last lap, allowing
Williams through for 2nd.
In heat 13 Busby gated round Aris who held off Clarke for 2nd
as Jarman brought up the rear.Heat 14 saw Dave Murphy make use
of his grid 1 to lead all the way.Taylor got round Rothwell for
2nd as Pedley was last after slipping his pedals.Heat 15 saw Gamble
lead all the way from gate 1 as John Murphy went inside Jolly
for 2nd going down the back straight on lap 1 with Williams at
the back.Heat 16 was a 3 rider race and it saw Greenhalgh,on the
first of his 2 grid 1's, lead Simmons for 2 laps with Teague at
the back.Going into the 1st turn on lap 3 Greenhalgh went down
after a challenge on the outside from Simmons who was excluded. The
restart saw Greenhalgh hold his grid 1 to win from Teague.
Heat 17 saw the title decided as Dave Murphy led all the way from
3 to complete a perfect maximum ahead of Greenhalgh(who was on
his 2nd grid 1),Williams and Jarman.Heat 18 saw Taylor make use
of his grid 1 to win from Teague,Aris and Jolly.Heat 19 saw Simmons
made up for his earlier exclusion by making use of his grid 1
to win the race ahead of Gamble,Pedley and Clarke.Rothwell led
heat 20 from Busby but gave him a nudge going into the 1st bend
on lap 2 allowing John Murphy through for the win.Rothwell held
on for 2nd as Busby failed to finish.A final check of the scores
saw a top 3 of Dave Murphy,Taylor and Rothwell with Murphy and
Busby tied for 4th so a run-off would be required The run off
was for this scribe the race of the meeting. It saw Busby on grid
4 and John Murphy on 2.After the tapes went up they met at the
first corner with John on the inside as they raced the 4 laps
with Allan on John's back wheel throughout but the 61 year old
Murphy took the honours to a standing ovation from the crowd, part
of which was for Busby who was just as happy for John as the crowd.

Sunday 6 March:Junior Individual Elimination Heat 2
(Top 14 Scorers qualify for the Semi-finals)
All 16 riders turned up for this one and the action got underway
with Daniel Pike leading all the way to win heat 1 from gate 1
with Simon Gamble taking 2nd place after going up the inside of
Sheffield team-mate Peter Pearson and Brad Thompson going into
the pits bend on lap 1.Brad Thompson took 3rd from Pearson on
the run-in to the line.Heat 2 needed 2 attempts before it got
started as the first attempt didn't even get off the start line
as Troy Cowell twitched while under orders and was sent back to
the
pits. When the race finally got underway Australian junior captain
Josh Ison led all the way from Daniel Thompson and Ross Priest.Heat
3 got as far as turn 1 when Scott Doherty went down but he was
deemed to be the victim of first bend bunching so the
race was called back with all 4.Robert Sellick then used his gate
1 to win the race ahead of Robert Hunt with Doherty holding off
Jono Birks for 3rd.Ben Schumacher was the first rider to face
2 races in succession from gate 1.In heat 4,the first of those
races,Peter Savage gated round him and held on for the win with
Brad Gentle taking 3rd after gating round David Hartman.
Heat 5 saw Schumacher take his 2nd gate 1 but Pike gated round
him and held on for the win as Doherty finished 3rd after rounding
Daniel Thompson going into the first bend on lap 2.Heat 6 saw
Savage win from his gate 1 but the action was going on behind
him as Sellick moved Ison over going into the first turn far enough
for Pearson to go up the inside for 2nd going down the back straight.Sellick
then held off Ison for 3rd.Heat 7 needed 3 attempts before it
got underway.Firstly Birks made a good start but Hartman forced
him over the inside edge and the race was stopped. The second attempt
didn't get off the start line due to excessive noise. At the third
attempt Birks then led all the way from his gate 1 with Cowell
taking 2nd after going inside Hartman coming out of the second
bend.Gamble took 3rd after passing Hartman going into turn 1 on
lap 2.It was now Gentle's turn to face 2 races in succession from
gate 1 and he led heat 8 from the start but the race was called
back after Hunt got tangled up with him and fell. The restart saw
Gentle lead all the way as Hunt powered round Priest and Brad
Thompson to finish 2nd.
Heat 9 saw Gentle take his 2nd gate 1 and he made the start but
the race was stopped after he was put over the inside edge by
Ison. The restart saw Gentle and Ison make the start but going
into turn 1 they left a gap on the inside big enough for Birks
to shoot through and go on for the win from Gentle as Pike took
3rd after passing Ison going into the pits bend.Heat 10 saw Hunt
make full use of his gate 1 by rocketing from the start and leading
all the way from Daniel Thompson with Pearson passing Hartman
for 3rd going into the first turn on lap 3.Heat 11 saw Doherty
make a good gate but Gamble got round him exiting turn 2 and then
Savage did likewise going down the back straight.Gamble held on
for the win to inflict Savage's only defeat as Doherety held on
for 3rd ahead of Priest.Cowell was the next rider to face 2 straight
races from gate 1 and he made use of the first one in heat 12,leading
all the way with Sellick 2nd after rounding Brad Thompson going
into turn 1.Schumacher took 3rd after passing the Murray Bridge
rider going into turn 3.
Heat 13 saw Cowell on his 2nd gate 1 but he wasted it by moving
at the tapes for the 2nd time in the match and was sent back to
the pits.Savage led all the way with Hunt 2nd after taking advantage
of Pike getting a nudge from the Australian rider going into turn
1.Heat 14 saw Birks,on gate 2,gate round Priest and hold on for
the win.Pearson held 3rd from Schumacher but the latter powered
round Pearson on the exit of the pits bend and took 3rd place
on the line.Heat 15 saw Gamble make use of his grid 1 by leading
all the way from Gentle with Sellick 3rd after passing Dainel
Thompson going into turen 1 on lap 2.Hartman was the final rider
to face 2 successive races from gate 1.Heat 16 was the first of
those and it saw Ison, off gate 3,gate round Hartman and Brad Thompson
and lead all the way.Exiting turn 2 Doherty powered round the
outside of Brad Thompson to move into 3rd then he powered up the
inside of Hartman at the start of lap 3 to move into 2nd which
he held on to.Meanwhile Brad Thompson took 3rd after copying Doherty's
move on Hartman as the riders started the final lap.
Heat 17 saw Hartman take his 2nd gate 1 but Pike rocketed out
of gate 4 and lead all the way with Hartman holding off Sellick
for 2nd until the pit bend of lap 3 when Sellick moved inside
him and Hartman drifted out far enough for Priest to go through
for 3rd.As the riders started the final lapPriest went for an
inside move on Sellick but fell on the first turn after getting
a nudge from Sellick.Hartman reclaimed 3rd as Priest remounted
for 4th.Heat 18 saw Pearson,Doherty and Gentle make the gate together
but Pearson moved Doherty and Gentle over far enough for Cowell
to sail through and go on for the race win.Doherty took 2nd after
passing Pearson going up the back straight on the first lap with
Gentle taking 3rd after moving inside Pearson exiting Pearson
exiting turn 2 on the 2nd lap.Pearson slid off when Gentle moved
insine him but remounted for 4th.In heat 19 Ison led initially
from the gate with Hunt getting round Schumacher for 2nd.Schumacher
slipped exiting turn 2 and Gamble shot round him to take 3rd.Meanwhile
up front Hunt eventually won the race after passing Ison right
on the finish line.Heat 20 saw a false start at first,Brad Thompson
and Birks having twitched simultaneously at the start. When the
race got underway Savage led all the way from gate 2 with Brad
Thompson holding up Birks long enough for brother Daniel to power
round the pair of them to take 2nd.Meanwhile Brad held off birks
for 3rd.
A final check of the scores saw that Brad Thompson and Pearson
were tied for the final qualifying spot for the semi-finals so
a run-off was required between the 2 riders.Pearson chose gate
1 and led the Murray Bridge rider all the way to book his place
in the semi-finals.

Junior Test No 4 at Le Fevre
Both teams made changes for this match. For Australia Peter
Savage and Ryan Edson made way for Ben Schumacher and David Hartman. For
GB captain Daniel Pike,Chris Eaton and Chris Davies were rested
with Ryan Hughes(back from Melbourne),Kieran Jones and Simon Gamble
recalled.Nicky Evans would take over as captain. The changes made
the Brits weaker in theory but events subsequently proved otherwise.
Heat 1 saw Nick Myhill make the gate and lead all the way with
Dave Carmichael getting round Brad Gentle for 2nd as Troy Cowell
trailed in last.Heat 2 saw Ryan Jones make use of gate 1 and lead
all the way from Mitchell Spear with Ben Schumacher going round
Ryan Hughes for 3rd going into the pits bend on the last lap.Heat
3 saw an even break from the start but Simon Gamble emerged in
front exiting turn 2 and led for the rest of the race.Behind him
Josh Ison made his way through to 2nd going into the pits bend
and stayed there whilst Nicky Evans took 3rd from Lennon Spear
going into turn 1 on lap 2.Heat 4 saw Myhill make use of gate
1 and lead all the way from Gentle who gated round David Hartman
and Kieran Jones with the latter taking 3rd after passing Hartman
exiting the pit bend on lap 2.Heat 5 needed 3 attempts to get
it started. The first attempt saw an even break from the start
but going into turn 1 Ryan Bartram clipped Cowell and crashed. The
race was stopped and all 4 were put back in.The 2nd attempt again
saw an even break from the start but going into turn 1all 4 riders
fell and the race was called back again. At the 3rd attempt all
4 riders went into turn 1 together but Cowell and Carmichael emerged
in front of Daniel Thompson and Bartram. That's how the order remained
despite Bartram falling on the pits bend on lap 1.The 6-4 to Australia
was the 1st of what would be only 3 heat advantages they would
get all match.Heat 6 saw Gamble outgate M Spear but going into
turn 1 Schumacher and Evans tangled,the latter falling.The restart,with
all 4 riders, saw Gamble again outgate M Spear and lead him all
the way as Evans held off Schumacher for 3rd in a race that went
with gate positions.Heat 7 saw Myhill power round from gate 4
and lead all the way from L Spear with Carmichael holding off
Ison for 3rd.Heat 8 saw R Jones make the gate and lead from Cowell,Hughes
and Gentle. That's how it stayed until the pits bend on lap 3 when
Cowell moved inside R Jones but there was a gap big enough for
Hughes to nip through and go on to win ahead of Cowell,R Jones
and Gentle.Heat 9 needed 4 attempts to get it started.The 1st
attempt saw M Spear and Evans gate together but behind them Hartman
fell after colliding with K Jones and all 4 were called back. The
2nd attempt didn't get off the start line due to a false start
for excessive noise. The 3rd attempt saw the same scenario as the
1st attempt. At the 4th attempt M Spear made the gate and led all
the way from Evans with Hartman emerging ahead of another tangle
with K Jones to take 3rd.The 6-4 to Australia was their 2nd heat
advantage of the match
HALF TIME SCORE:Great Britain 50 Australia 40.
Heat 10 saw Bartram rocket out from gate 3 and lead all the way
from team-mate Gamble with Thompson and Schumacher at the back.Heat
11 needed 4 attempts to get it started.The 1st 2 attempts saw
false starts as firstly a car alarm went off whilst the riders
were under starters orders, then the tapes failed to go up between
2 and 5 seconds.The 3rd attempt saw R Jones emerge ahead of L
Spear Ison and Hughes. As the riders were about to start lap 2
R Jones and Ison got caught up on the outside edge and the race
was stopped. At the 4th attempt L Spear,R Jones and Ison went into
turn 1 together but they left a gap big enough for Hughes to take
advantage of to go through and win his second race of the night.Going
into the pits bend L Spear moved R Jones over far enough for Ison
to go through the gap to take 2nd with L Spear holding off R Janes
for 3rd.Heat 12 saw Australia make a reserve change as Thompson
replaced Schumacher.Myhill outgated M Spear and led him all the
way with Carmichael holding off Thompson for 3rd.Heat 13 saw an
even break from the start but Cowell emerged in front from Evans,Gentle
andGamble. That's how it stayed until going along the back straight
the whistle went to stop the race. All 4 riders were called back
and Gamble made the most of his reprieve by rocketing out of the
gate and leading all the way.Behind him Cowell and Evans had a
good battle until the former nudged Evans and Gentle needed no
second invitation to go through the gap to take 2nd.Evans took
3rd from Cowell after the latter slipped hjis pedals exiting turn
2.Heat 14 saw Hughes outgate L Spear but going into turn 1 Thompson
went down after tangling with K jones. The restart saw L Spear
outgate Hu#ghes and lead all the way.Hughesand K Jones then combined
to keep Thompson at the back.Heat 15 got as far as turn 1 where
Bartram and Hartman tangled and all 4 were called back. The restart
saw Ison lead from R Jones,Bartram and Hartman.Going into turn
1 on lap 4 Ison and R Jones left a gap for Bartram to nip up the
inside but going into the pits bend Bartram crossed the inside
edge of the track and rammed Ison who fell.Bartram was excluded
and Ison was awarded the race win ahead of R Jones and Hartman.GB
were now 15 points ahead and they needed just 7 points from the
remaining 3 races to be certain of winning the match.Heat 16 saw
Evans and Carmichael outgate the Aussie pair of Schumacher and
Gentle and lead them all the way for the required 7 points to
clinch victory.Schumacher finished 3rd after Gentle skidded on
the pits bend on lap 2.Heat 17 saw Australia replace Ison with
Thompson.M Spear made the gate and led from Myhill,Hughes and
Thompson.Going into the pits bend on lap 3 Myhill went for an
inside move on M Spear but fell, allowing Hughes to nip inside
M Spear and go on to win with Thompson 3rd ahead of the remounted
Myhill who lost out on his 3rd maximum of the series with his
fall. The final heat saw Gamble make use of gate 1 and lead all
the way to complete a brilliant paid maximum as R Jones forced
his way into 2nd as L Spear and Cowell trailed in 3rd and 4th.
Considering that the Junior Lions were theoretically weakened
by Pike and Eaton not in the team this was an emphatic performance
by the team.Gamble jusitfied the decision by team manager Ivan
Pike to recall him by scoring that brilliant paid maximum.

Monday 7 March:Australia v Poland Senior
Test No 1 at Le Fevre
EENEE MENEE MINEE MO Yes that's how the Polish Team selected
their team after being disallowed a 9th man in an 8-man formula
(which was a strange decision as the England senior team had been
allowed to field 9 riders in their match against the Rest of the
World on the opening night of the tour) but with the strength
in depth of the Polish squad you could believe that it wouldn't
matter who they left out. Jacek Wojciechowski was the rider to
be left out.
The coin toss for gate positions was won by Poland and they took
1 and 3 for heat 1 which saw Karol Szymanski unleash one of his
rocket-like starts to lead all the way with compatriot Pawel Kozlowski
2nd as Brad Hoppo took 3rd after passing Craig Staunton on the
3rd bend on the last lap.Heat 2 saw Daniel Pudney get a flyer
from gate 1 and lead all the way with Brad Gentle holding 2nd
exiting turn 2 but going down the back straight Marcin Paradzinski
and Tomasz Szwajorek went either side of him and held on to finish
in that order as B Gentle trailed in last.Heat 3 saw the Poles
Lukasz Nowacki and Pawel Cegielski make the gate from Spear who
fell after clipping Cegielski's rear wheel and the race was stopped. The
restart saw the Poles make the gate again as Spear clipped Cegielski
again but managed to keep it upright this time.Meanwhile Matt
Gentle powered up the inside exiting turn 2 and going into turn
3 moved Nowacki out far enough for Spear to dive up the inside
and go on for the win ahead of Cegileski with M Gentle holding
off Nowacki for 3rd.In heat 4 Jason Jesson made the start but
Kozlowski got round him going down the back straight.Tomasz Walkowiak
then moved inside Jesson as the riders started lap 2 as Jesson
dropped back to last behind team mate Staunton. On the back straight
Kozlowski allowed Walkowiak through for the win as Simultaneously
Jesson retook Staunton for 3rd.Heat 5 saw another rocket start
from Szymanski as he led all the way with Tomasz Wlodarczyk slotting
into 2nd and staying there as Hoppo and Nigel Greenhalch were
at the back.Heat 6 needed 3 attempts before it finally started.Firstly
M Gentle led from gate 1 but Spear and Paradzinski collided on
the first turn and the race was called back. The 2nd attempt again
got as far as the 1st bend before another stopopage, this time
after Szwajorek fell after clipping Paradzinski's rear wheel. At
the 3rd attempt M Gentle held his gate 1 and led all the way from
Szwajorek,Paradzinski and Spear.Heat 7 saw Australia make a reserve
change as Jesson came in for Hoppo.Nowacki blasted out of gate
3 and led all the way with Cegielski 2nd and Jesson 3rd after
passing Staunton who slid off on the pits bend and remounted for
4th.Heat 8 saw Pudney rocket out of the gate and lead all the
way as 2nd placed Kozlowski and 3rd placed Szymanski combined
to keep B Gentle at the back. That 3rd place for Szymanski was
to be the only point he would drop all match.Heat 9 and the first
half closed with another shared heat as M Gentle took the win
after gating round Walkowiak as Szwajorek held off Jesson for
3rd.
HALF TIME SCORE:Australia 38 Poland 52
Heat 10 saw Wlodarczyk make the gate but Spear fell on the exit
of turn 2 and the race was called back.Wlodarczyk again gated
from 2 but allowed Paradzinski round him going down the back straight.Greenhalch
took 3rd from Spear.Heat 11 saw Pudney twitch while under orders
but the referee had heard a noise on the 1st turn area so Pudney
was kept in the race.He made the most of the reprieve though, rocketing
out of the gate to lead all the way but B Gentle was kept at the
back by Cegielski and Nowacki.Heat 12 saw the first exclusion
of the match as Paradzinski twitched under orders and was sent
back to the pits.Szwajorek then made the gate friom 2 and led
all the way from Hoppo and Staunton.Heat 13 saw Szymanski unleash
another one of his rocket gates but M Gentle went down on the
first bend and the race was stopped. The restart saw Szymanski
get another rocket start and power round to take the win with
Kozlowski 2nd ahead of Spear and M Gentle, who fell coming out
of the pits bend on lap 2 after clipping Kozlowski and remounting
for 4th.Heat 14 saw Jesson make the start but Wlodarczyk got round
him going into turn 1 as Nowacki powered round both of them to
take the win.Wlodarczyk held off Jesson for 2nd to complete a
3 ride paid maximum as B Gentle trailed in last. This meant that
the Poles needed 4 points from the last 4 races to clinch the
match. They would not get them in heat 15 as Cegielski and Walkowiak
were both excluded for not making the rest linw within the time
limit so Greenhalch and Pudney rode 1 lap only for a 7-0.Heat
16 saw Walkowaik come in for a reserve ride instead of Kozlowski. It
was M Gentle who rocketed from gate 1 to win ahead of Paradzinski
with Hoppo 3rd after passing Walkowiak going down the back straight
on lap 3.This result was enough to ensure that the Poles could
not be caught.Heat 17 saw Szwajorek and Cegielski make the gate
but Staunton, trying to get round the former, fell and collected
him.The race was called back and the restart saw Szwajorek and
Cegielski make the gate again and finish in that order with B
Gentle, who had completely missed the gate at the first attempt,3rd
after passing Staunton going into the last lap.Heat 18 saw Szymanski
unleash yet another rocket start but Nowacki, attempting to power
round from 4,was given no room by Spear going down the back straight
and ended up in a heap on the track after colliding with the safety
fence and a restrat was called. The restart saw Szymanski rocket
out again as Nowacki powered round Pudney and Spear(who finished
3rd and 4th in this race) to take 2nd but Szymanski let him round
going down the back straight. That 7-3 was Poland's 9th of the
match

Semi-Final 1 at Le Fevre
Top 8 Scorers qualify for the Final
Heat 1 saw Jono Birks lead from gate 1 but Scott Doherty moved
inside him as the riders went down the back straight and held
on to the lead until the 3rd bend on lap 3 when Birks got back
in front.Meanwhile behind them the battle of the 2 small welsh
riders,Mark Carmichael and Aaron Hughes, was won by the former.Heat
2 saw Chris Eaton rocket from gate 1 and lead all the way with
Dave Carmichael holding 2nd until turn 2 on the last lap when
Ryan Edson overtook the Welsh rider and held on for 2nd.Jamie
Brown trailed in last.Heat 3 saw the 3 Australian riders Ben Schumacher,Ross
Priest and Troy Cowell all make the gate
together but it was Cowell who emerged in front and he held on
to win from Schumacher,Priest and Richard Bowler.Nicky Evans was
the first rider to face 2 successive races from gate 1.Heat 4
was the first of these and he made the gate but nudged Joe Clarke
out going into turn 1,allowing Peter Savage through for the win.Clarke
moved inside Evans going into turn 1 on lap 2 and held on for
2nd with Lennon Spear 3rd after going inside Evans going into
turn 3.
Evans faced his 2nd successive gate 1 in heat 5 which was an interesting
looking race as he would meet Birks,Eaton and Cowell all of whom
had won their first races. It was Evans who made the gate and led
as Cowell moved into 2nd ahead of Eaton and Birks going down the
back straight.Going into turn 1 on lap 2 Eaton nudged Birks over
the inside edge and was lucky to stay in the race. The order remained
Evans,Cowell,Eaton and Birks until the 3rd turn on the final lap
when Cowell, trying an inside move on Evans, moved the Welsh rider
out far enough for Eaton and Birks to nip through for 1st and
2nd respectively with Evans recovering for 3rd ahead of Cowell.Savage
then made use of his gate 1 in heat 6,leading all the way with
Edson 2nd after going round Priest on the back straight as Hughes
trailed in last.Heat 7 saw Spear lead all the way from D Carmichael
with Doherty 3rd after rounding Bowler(who had made a terrible
gate) going down the back straight. It was now Clarke's turn to
face 2 successive races from gate 1.Heat 8 was the first of those
races and he made full use of his first gate 1,bolting out and
leading all the way ahead of Schumacher.Meanwhile at the back
M Carmichael rounded Brown for 3rd and stayed there after a good
battle.
Heat 9 saw Clarke take his 2nd straight gate 1 and he led from
the gate again but behind him Bowler and Edson tangled going into
turn 1 and the race was called back.Bowler then blew his reprieve
by moving at the start and was sent back to the pits.Clarke then
held on to his gate 1 to win with Birks 2nd after passing Edson
exiting turn 2 on the last lap.Heat 10 saw Eaton blast out from
gate 2 and lead all the way with Spear holding 2nd from Schumacher
who powered round Spear going down the back straight on lap 3
as Hughes came last.Heat 11 needed 2 attempts to get it started
as firstly the tapes failed to go up .When they did eventually
go up Doherty rocketed out of gate 2 to take the lead as Savage
rounded Cowell for 2nd exiting turn 2.Going into turn 1 on lap
2 Doherty then skidded and fell, allowing the other 3 riders round. The
race stayed Savage,Cowell,Brown and the remounted Doherty until
the riders exited the pits bend on lap 2 when Cowell fell, allowing
Brown through for 2nd which he held on to ahead of Doherty as
Cowell romounted for 4th.It was now the turn of DCarmichael to
face 2 successive races from gate 1.Heat 12 was the first of those
races and in a race where he would face his brother he made full
use of his first gate 1,leading all the way.Evans took 2nd after
getting round M Carmichael and Priest. The latter finished 3rd
after passing the former going into the pits bend on the first
lap.
Heat 13 saw D Carmichael's 2nd straight gate 1 and he made the
gate but Savage got inside him exiting turn 2 then Birks passed
the Welsh rider for 2nd entering the pit bend on lap 2.D Carmichael
took 3rd,holding off Schumacher.Evans rocketed out of gate 3 in
heat 14 to lead all the way from Bowler,Brown and Hughes.Heat
15 saw Clarke blast out from gate 2 and lead all the way with
Eaton taking 2nd after rounding Doherty going into the pits bend
on lap 1 as Priest trailed in last.Spear was the final rider to
face 2 successive races from grid 1 and the first of them, heat
16,saw him lead initially from Edson with M Carmichael ahead of
Cowell.Going into the pits bend on lap 1 Cowell powered round
M Carmichael and stayed ahead for 3rd as up front Edson took the
win after going inside Spear entering the pist bend on lap 3.
Spear took his 2nd straight gate 1 in heat 17 and he made no mistake
this time, leading all the way with all the action going on behind
him.Birks powered round Brown and Priest to take 2nd initially
but drifted wide entering the pits bend, allowing Brown and Priest
through for 2nd and 3rd.Going into turn 1 on lap 2 Birks moved
inside Priest for 3rd then 1 lap later repeated the dose on Brown
to move into 2nd and stay there.Priest took 3rd after copying
Birks's inside moves on Brown on the last lap.Clarke bolted from
gate 3 in heat 18 and led all the way with D Carmichael 2nd after
going round cowell exiting turn 2 as Hughes trailed in last.Evans
rocketed from gate 2 and led heat 19 all the way from Edson with
Doherty holding 3rd from Schumacher but then the former slid exiting
turn 2 on lap 2,allowing the latter through for 3rd.Heat 20 saw
Savage bolt from gate 3 and lead all the way to complete a superb
maximum as all the action was going on behind him.As the riders
exited turn 2 Bowler held up Eaton long enough for M Carmichael
to nip through ahead of Eaton, who subsequently dropped back to
last.Bowler eventually finished 2nd with M Carmichael holding
off Eaton until the 3rd bend on the final lap when Eaton (the
spoilsport) roared round the outside and was quite rightly met
with a chorus of boos as he crossed the line.

Semi-Final 2 at Le Fevre
Top 8 Scorers qualify for the Final
Heat 1 saw Simon Gamble lead all the way from gate 1 with
Peter Pearson getting round Kieran Jones and Brad Gentle at the
end of the back straight on lap 1.Heat 2 saw Daniel Pike lead
all the way from gate 2,initially from Myhill,Sellick and Bartram. As
the riders exited turn 2 on the final lap,Myhill slipped allowing
Sellick through for 2nd then Sellick nudged Myhill coming out
of the 3rd turn allowing Ryan Bartram through to take 3rd on the
line.Marcin Paradzinski flew out of the gate to win heat 3 as
Josh Ison and Ryan Hughes left a gap on the inside which Daniel
Thompson nipped through to take 2nd as Ison finished 3rd ahead
of Hughes.Ryan Jones became the first rider to face 2 successive
races from grid 1.Heat 4 was the first of them and he led all
the way with Mitchell Spear getting round Robert Hunt for 2nd
going into turn 1 with Chris Davies at the back.
Heat 5 saw R Jones take his 2nd gate 1 and after the tapes failed
to go up at the first attempt,he led all the way once again with
all the action going on behind him.Going into turn 1 on lap 2
Myhill forced his way past Gamble for 2nd but he crossed the inside
edge in making his move and he was excluded,a bit of a surprising
decision though as Gamble had nudged him over the inside edge
in the first place.Gamble was awarded 2nd and Paradzinski was
placed 3rd.Heat 6 saw Ison lead all the way from gate 2 with Hunt
holding 2nd initially from K Jones and Sellick.Going into the
second turn on lap 2 Hunt went down thus allowing K Jones and
Sellick through but on the 3rd bend the latter 2 riders swapped
places and that's how it stayed as Hunt remounted for 4th.Pike
absolutely flew out of gate 3 to win heat 7 ahead of Hughes,Davies
and Gentle. It was now the turn of Spear to have 2 successive gate
1's and the first one, heat 8,saw him lead all the way from Bartram,Pearson
and Thompson(who had fallen on the pit bend on lap 2 and remounted).
Heat 9 saw Spear make use of his 2nd grid 1 to lead all the way
as Gamble took 2nd from Sellick going into the first turn on lap
3 with Ryan Hughes watching the race from the pits after moving
at the tapes.Heat 10 saw Myhill lead all the way from gate 2 as
Davies got round Thompson and K Jones for 2nd.Heat 11 saw Paradzinski
make use of his gate 1 to lead all the way but the action was
going on behind him.Hunt slid off on the first turn after clipping
Bartram who then moved inside Gentle for 2nd going into the pit
bend but as they came out of the pit bend Bartram went down after
a clash with the Australian who was excluded for use of leg.Bartram
was awarded 2nd with Hunt 3rd.It was now the turn of Pike to have
2 successive gate 1's and the first of them, heat 12, saw him lead
all the way but there was another battle for the other places.Ison
got round Pearson coming out of the second bend but Pearson repassed
Ison coming out of the pit bend.R Jones, who had been at the back, then
moved inside Ison at the start of lap 2 and then moved inside
Pearson coming out of the second bend and held on for 2nd ahead
of Pearson and Ison.
Pike had his second gate 1 in heat 13 but Hunt led all the way
as Thompson and Gamble got in front of Pike going down the back
straight but as the riders exited the pits bend Pike was past
both riders as though they were standing still.Thompson and Gamble
then clashed on the back straight on the final lap with Thompson
remounting for 3rd ahead of Gamble.Heat 14 saw Bartram lead initially
from Hughes with the Jones brothers at the back.Hughes took the
lead from Bartram going down the back straight on the final lap
with the battle of the Jones brothers being resolved in favour
of Ryan.Heat 15 saw Gentle and Spear lead from the gate ahead
of Myhill but the latter moved inside Gentle going down the back
straight then moved inside Spear as the riders exited the pits
bend.Ison, who was last at one stage, moved inside Gentle coming
out of the second turn on lap 2 then passed Spear with a similar
move 1 lap later. It was now Davies's turn for 2 successive gate
1's and the first one, heat 16,saw Paradzinski power all the way
round from gate 4 to lead the Welsh rider home with Pearson 3rd
from Sellick after the latter had fallen on the pit bend and remounted.
Heat 17 saw Ison lead all the way from gate 2 as Gamble rounded
Bartram and Davies for 2nd coming out of turn 2 with Bartram moving
inside Davies for 3rd at the end of the first lap.Heat 18 saw
Paradzinski get another flyer, this time from gate 2 to lead all
the way from Spear with Pike and K Jones having a good battle
for 3rd.Going into turn 1 on lap 2 the Welsh rider moved inside
Pike but Pike repassed him on the run-in to the line.Heat 19 saw
R Jones gate round Sellick to win as Gentle got round Thompson
for 3rd as the riders came out of the second turn.Heat 20 needed
2 attempts before it started.Firstly Myhill powered round everyone
from gate 4 but the race was called back after Hughes went down
following a clash on the first turn. The restart saw Myhill again
fly round the others as Hughes got inside Pearson as the riders
went down the back straight on the first lap.Pearson then fell
on the pits bend on lap 2 which Hunt capitalised on to take 3rd
as Pearson remounted for 4th.
Of the riders who missed out on qualifying for the final,Hughes
will rue his tapes exclusion in heat 9 and Hunt's fall in heat
10 cost him dearly as he would have qualified for a run-off with
Bartram and Myhill if he had stayed on.

9th place rider to face a run-off with the 9th place
riders from Heats 2 & 3
Heat 1 saw Pawel Kozlowski lead all the way as Mick Aris held
off Barry Copping for 2nd with Jamie Brown bringing up the rear.Heat
2 saw Garry Pearce lead initially from the gate ahead of Adam
Peck who took the lead from Pearce going into turn 1 on the 3rd
lap and held on to win from Pearce as Tomasz Szwajorek and Tomasz
Walkowiak finished 3rd and 4th respectively.Heat 3 saw Pawel Cegielski
make the start from gate 2 and lead all the way from Steve Harris,Rick
Jolly and Steve Copping.Heat 4 saw Robert Hudson face the first
of 2 consecutive races from gate 1 but Aaron Lowey led all the
way from Craig Newsome with Lennon Spear 3rd after passing Hudson
on the pits bend on lap 1.
Heat 5 saw Hudson take his 2nd gate 1.Pearce led initially from
Harris,Hudson and B Copping but at the start of lap 3 the latter
was thrown off his bike after his chain came off.He quickly cleared
the track thus enabling the race to continue.Going down the back
straight for the last time Harris moved inside Pearce and held
on for the win as Hudson trailed in 3rd.Lowey made full use of
his gate 1 in heat 6,blasting out to take the win ahead of Szwajorek,Jolly
and Brown.Heat 7 saw Peck make the gate from gate 3 and lead all
the way as Kozlowski,Spear and S Copping finished in that order
behind him.It was Newsome's turn to have 2 successive races from
gate 1 and the first of them, heat 8,saw him take the lead out
of the gate with Cegielski on his outside but Newsome drifted
wide on the pits bend on the first lap, allowing Walkowiak through
to go on for the win.2 laps later Cegielski moved inside Newsome
for 2nd as Aris finished last but he was there to take advantage
of any incidents up front if needed.
Newsome faced his 2nd gate 1 in heat 9 which would also see the
clash of the Copping brothers.Newsome led initially from Szwajorek
and the Copping brothers and the Scot held off the Pole until
the run-in to the line when the Pole got round him.The clash of
the Copping brothers was an anti-climax as Barry took 3rd from
Steve who had slid off coming out of turn 1 and remounted for
4th.Heat 10 saw Cegielski unleash a thunderbolt of a gate to lead
all the way from Pearce with Brown getting into 3rd coming out
of turn 2 but Spear took 3rd from the Sheffield youngster going
into the pits bend.Heat 11 saw Harris lead all the way from his
gate 1 with Kozlowski,Walkowiak and Lowey initially behind him.Coming
out of the pits bend Lowey moved inside Walkowiak for 3rd and
stayed there until the last lap when he tried an outside move
on Kozlowski going down the back straight but the Pole nudged
him and Lowey ended up last after Walkowiak had moved inside him.Peck
was next to face 2 successive races from gate 1 and in heat 12
he made full use of the first one, leading all the way from Aris
with Hudson 3rd after rounding Jolly out of turn 2.
Heat 13 saw Peck make use of his 2nd gate 1 to lead all the way
as behind him Cegielski nipped inside Lowey coming out of turn
2 with B Copping bringing up the rear.Heat 14 saw Cegielski storm
from gate 1 to lead all the way from Hudson as S Copping paddled
his way round turn 1 but managed to hold on for 3rd ahead of Brown.Heat
15 saw Kozlowski make use of his grid 1 to lead all the way.Newsome
held 2nd from Pearce until the first turn on lap 3 when Pearce
moved inside the Scot and took 2nd with Jolly at the back.Spear
was the last rider to face 2 successive races from grid 1 and
the first of them, heat 15,saw him emerge in front after a pretty
even break from the start and hold on for the win ahead of Harris
with Szwajorek 3rd after passing Aris on the run-in to the finish.
Spear made use of his 2nd gate 1 in heat 17,leading all the way
from Walkowiak with B Copping 3rd after passing Jolly going into
lap 2.Heat 18 saw Newsone gate ahead of Peck to take the win with
Brown 3rd ahead of Harris who slipped his pedals as the tapes
went up.Heat 19 was a Polish 1-2-3 as Szwajorek led home Cegielski,Kozlowski
and Hudson.Heat 20 saw Lowey blast out from gate 3 to win with
Pearce 2nd after rounding Aris coming out of turn 2 as S Copping
trailed in last.
A final check of the scores saw that 3 riders,Newsome,Walkowiak
and Spear were tied for the final automatic qualifying space for
the semi-finals so a run-off was required. The winner would qualify
automatically for the semi-finals,the 2nd placed rider would go
to a run-off with the 2 9th placed riders from the 2 events at
Salisbury for the last 2 semi-final spots and whoever finished
3rd would be eliminated from the competition. So to the run-off
and it lined up Spear on 1,Newsome on 2 and Walkowiak on 4.It
was Spear and Newsome who gated ahead of the Pole but going into
the pit bend Spear gave Newsome a nudge which allowed Walkowiak
through up the inside. The Pole then nudged Spear going into turn
1 allowing Newsome through for 2nd as Walkowiak held on to win
and advance straight to the semi-finals while Newsome would have
to face a further run-off to see if he could get to the semi-finals.

Friday 11 March-Senior Individual Semi-Final
1 at Salisbury
Top 8 scorers qualify for the final
The run-off for the last 2 spaces was not required as Daniel
Pike, who had qualified via Preliminary Final Heat 3 and was drawn
to this semi-final,withdrew from the competition so Allan Busby, who
was 9th in that same Preliminary Final, replaced Pike while Brad
Gentle was allocated to this semi-final with Craig Newsome allocated
to the other Semi.
The action started with Jack Spear making use of his grid 1 to
lead heat 1 all the way from Tomasz Walkowiak with Dave Murphy
3rd after rounding Garry Pearce coming out of turn 2.Pearce tried
an inside move going into the final turn but fell and remounted
for 4th.Heat 2 and Aaron Lowey blasted out from gate 4 to lead
all the way as Chris Jewkes and Allan Busby took advantage of
a gap left by Pawel Cegielski going into turn 1.There were no
further positional changes even though Cegielski tried an inside
move going down the back straight on the last lap but hit Busby
and fell, remounting for 1 point.Heat 3 saw Karol Szymanski make
one of his familiar rocket like starts and lead all the way with
Tomasz Wlodarczyk 2nd throughout. The action was going on behind
these two as Steve Harris held 3rd from Brad Gentle until the
pits bend when the young Aussie moved into 3rd and held on to
it until Harris came round the outside of him going into the last
lap.Gentle fought back though and going down the back straight
gave Harris a nudge which saw the GB team manager end up on the
floor after colliding with the fence. The race was stopped and
awarded as it was on the last lap with Szymanski declared the
winner from Wlodarczyk with Harris awarded 3rd and Gentle excluded
for his challenge on Harris.Terry Norman was the first rider to
face 2 successive races from gate 1 and he made full use of the
first one in heat 4 to lead all the way from Mark Winwood,Marcin
Paradzinski and Paul White.
Heat 5 saw Norman make use of his second gate 1 to hold off Szymanski
as Spear held off Cegielski for 3rd as the Pole repeated his heat
2 crash, this time after clipping the concrete edge.Winwood became
the 3rd rider to win from gate 1 in heat 6 as he lead it all the
way with plenty of action going on behind him.Going down the back
straight on the first lap Gentle made his way into 2nd from Walkowiak
and Busby.Going into lap 2 Busby got round Walkowiak for 3rd but
1 lap later the Pole retook 3rd with an inside pass and then went
on to pass Gentle for 2nd after the latter had slipped on the
pits bend on lap 3 as Busby finished last.Heat 7 saw an even break
from the start but Harris emerged ahead of Jewkes and Paradzinski
with Pearce at the back.Coming out of the pits bend Pearce moved
inside Paradzinski for 3rd but the young Pole re-passed Pearce
2 laps later in the same place but Pearce returned the compliment
on the final lap as up front Harris held on to win the race ahead
of Jewkes.White was next for 2 successive gate 1's.Heat 8,the
first of them, saw Lowey rocket from gate 2 and lead throughout.Wlodarczyk
took 2nd from White going down the back straight on the first
lap but drifted wide,as did White, thus allowing Murphy through
for 2nd with White re-passing Wlodarczyk for 3rd.
Heat 9 saw White take his 2nd gate 1 in a race that needed 2 attempts
for it to get started. The first attempt didn't get off the start
line as Busby moved at the tapes and was sent back to the pits.Harris
then gated round White and went on to win with Spear taking 2nd
after passing White on the inside going into turn 1 on lap 3.Heat
10 was an all-Polish affair and it saw an even break from the
gate by all 4.Going down the back straight Wlodarczyk emerged
in front from Cegielski,Walkowiak and Paradzinski. It stayed like
that until turn 1 on the last lap when Cegielski went inside Wlodarczyk
for the win with Walkowiak and Paradzinski 3rd and 4th respectively.Heat
11 saw Szymanski unleash another one of his electric gates to
lead all the way as Lowey got round Pearce for 2nd place coming
out of turn 2.Winwood took 3rd place from Pearce on the run-in
to the line.It was now the turn of Jewkes to have 2 successive
grid 1's.Heat 12 was the first one and the first attempt of 3
did not get off the start line as Gentle moved at the tapes and
was sent back to the pits.Jewkes and Murphy made the gate in front
of Norman but Jewkes slid off exiting turn 2 and the race was
called back.at the 3rd attempt Murphy and Jewkes got in front
but Norman got inside Jewkes exiting turn 2 and then he went on
to take the win from Murphy right on the line.
Jewkes took his second grid 1 in heat 13 and he made use of it
by holding off Winwood with Spear 3rd after passing Wlodarczyk
going into the pits bend.Heat 14 saw Lowey get a flyer from gate
1 to lead home Harris,Norman and Wlodarczyk.Pearce became the
3rd successive winner from gate 1 in heat 15,holding off Cegielski
with Gentle 3rd after passing White going into the pits bend.Paradzinski
was the final rider to face 2 successive gate 1's and the first
of those, heat 16,saw him make the gate from 1 but Szymanski was
round him as the riders exited turn 2 and went on for the win
as Paradzinski held 2nd with Murphy holding off Busby for 3rd.
Paradzinski took his 2nd gate 1 in heat 17 and he made use of
it to defeat Lowey with Spear 3rd after passing Gentle going down
the back straight.Heat 18 saw Szymanski and Walkowiak make the
gate but the latter fell exiting turn 2,allowing Jewkes and White
through for 2nd and 3rd as Szymanski held on for the win with
Walkowiak remounting for 4th.Heat 19 saw Norman and Wlodarczyk
make the gate but Norman took the Pole wide going into the pists
bend allowing Pearce through for the win ahead of Norman,Walkowiak
and Busby.Heat 20 needed 4 attempts before it finally started.Firstly
there was a clash of bikes going into the top bend and a restart
was called. The second attempt didn't leave the start line as Winwood
was adjudges to have moved while under orders so he would watch
the race from the pits. The 3rd attempt saw Cegielski fall on the
top bend after a clash with Murphy and he remained on the floor
as the riders started lap 2 so the race was stopped and Cegielski
was excluded for causing the race to be stopped. The race finally
got underway at the 4th attempt as Murphy used his grid 1 to hold
off Harris.
A final check of the scores saw that Winwood and Pearce were tied
for the final qualifying spot for the final so a run-off was required. This
saw Winwood on 2 and Pearce on 4.Winwood gated and led Pearce
all the way to book the final qualifying place with Pearce going
through as 2nd reserve.

Friday 11 March:Senior Individual Semi-Final
2 at Salisbury
Top 8 scorers qualify for the final
Heat 1 saw the Szwajoreks make the gate from Matt Gentle and
Pete Young.Going down the back straight an lap 2 Marcin Szwajorek
was forced over the outside edge by Gentle going inside him and
crashed into the fence. The Pole remounted but the race was stopped
going into the last lap and Marcin Szwajorek was excluded as he
was deemed to have been lapped and failed to leave the track. As
the riders returned to the pits words were exchanged between Marcin
Szwajorek and Gentle and both riders were warned by the referee.Tomasz
Szwajorek was declared the winner from Gentle and Young.Heat 2
saw Dave Hemsley take full advantage of his gate 1,leading all
the way from Craig Newsome,Martin Gamble and Josh Ison in a race
that went with gate positions.Heat 3 also went with gate positions
as Pawel Kozlowski led all the way from Richard Williamson,Adam
Peck and Fred Rothwell.Daniel Pudney was the first rider to face
2 successive races from gate 1 and in heat 4,the first of them,he
led it all the way with Lukasz Nowacki 2nd after powering round
Joe Clarke with Lee Aris at the back.
Heat 5 saw Pudney make use of his 2nd gate 1,leading all the way
to become the 4th successive race winner from gate 1.Hemsley took
2nd after powering round T Szwajorek who held off Peck for 3rd.Heat
6 saw the 5th successive winner from gate 1 as Clarke led all
the way from Kozlowski with Gamble 3rd after passing Gentle going
into the first turn on lap 2.That was the last race of the night
for Clarke as he withdrew, presumably to save himself for the Junior
final the following day.Heat 7 saw Nowacki fly from gate 2 and
lead all the way with the battle of the Scottish riders Newsome
and Young going the way of the former as Rothwell trailed in last.It
was now Aris's turn to have 2 races in succession from gate 1
and heat 8,the 1st one,saw him lead all the way from M Szwajorek
as Williamson took 3rd after passing Ison on the pits bend on
the first lap.
Heat 9 saw Aris make use of his 2nd gate 1,leading all the way
as Rothwell took 2nd after gating round Gamble who held on to
3rd ahead of T Szwajorek. That was to be Gamble's last race of
the night as he was seen hobbling round the trackside area after
the race with what appeared to be a knee injury.Heat 10 saw Williamson
lead from the gate but Hemsley went under him coming out of turn
2.Going into the pits bend on lap 2 Williamson got a nudge from
Gentle and fell. This left a gap for Nowacki to nip through for
2nd with Gentle 3rd ahead of the unlucky Williamson. That last
place would ultimately prove costly as if Williamson had stayed
on and finished 2nd he would have qualified for the final.Heat
11 was a 3 rider race following Clarke's withdrawal and it was
for this scribe the best of the match.Peck led from gate 1 but
Ison and Young went either side of him going down the back straight. But
both Ison and Young then drifted wide on the pits bend, allowing
Peck back through for 2nd.Going into turn 1 on lap 2 Ison nudged
Peck over the inside edge and Peck's lost momentum dropped him
to 3rd behind Young. The action still wasn't finished as going
into the back straight on the last lap Young moved inside Ison
but took the Australian wide on the pits bend, allowing Peck through
for the win with Young holding off Ison for 2nd.It was now Newsome's
turn for 2 consecutive races from gate 1 and the 1st of them, heat
12,got as far as the first turn where Newsome,Pudney and Kozlowski
all fell and the race was called back. After an even break from
the start M Szwajorek lost his chain on the run to the first bend.Newsome
led from Kozlowski but the Pole got in front exiting the pits
bend.Newsome finished 2nd ahead of Pudney who had slipped on the
top bend on lap 2.That was to be the last race of the night for
Marcin Szwajorek.
Newsome took his 2nd gate 1 in heat 13 (which was a 3 rider race
following Clarke's withdrawal) and he made use of it,leading all
the way with Williamson 2nd after passing T Szwajorek on the inside
going along the back straight on lap 3.Heat 14 was won by Pudney
who flew from gate 3 as Gentle took 2nd after rounding Rothwell
on the top bend.Rothwell finished 3rd ahead of Ison who had slipped
his pedals in the firts turn.Heat 15 saw Young make use of his
gate 1 to lead Aris home with Hemsley 3rd ahead of Kozlowski. It
was now Nowacki's turn to have 2 successive races from gate 1
and heat 16,the first of them, would feature just himself and Peck
following the withdrawals of Marcin Szwajorek and Gamble. It was
Nowacki who led Peck from the start and he held the lead until
the run-in to the finish when Peck got in front.
Heat 17 saw Nowacki take his 2nd successive gate 1 but the race
needed 4 attempts before it started. The first attempt only got
as far as the first bend before it was called back as the referee
was not happy with the way it was progressing. In the 2nd attempt
Nowacki rocketed from gate 1 to lead Kozlowski but coming out
of turn 2 Ison lost control of his bike and fell, bringing down
Tomasz Szwajorek in the process and earning himself an exclusion. The
3rd attempt saw Nowacki and Kozlowski clash coming out of the
start and the race was called back once again. At the 4th attempt
Nowacki blasted from the gate to win ahead of Kozlowski and Tomasz
Szwajorek.Heat 18 saw Gentle make use of his gate 1,rocketing
out to lead all the way from Peck,Aris and Newsome.Heat 19 was
a 3 rider race due to Gamble's withdrawal. It saw Pudney make the
gate and lead all the way from Williamson and Young.Heat 20 was
a 2 rider race following the withdrawals of Marcin Szwajorek and
Clarke.Hemsley, off gate 4,just needed to finish the race to book
his place in the final but was handed the 4 points on a plate
by Rothwell who moved at the start and was excluded.
A final check of the scores saw that Gentle and Young were tied
for the last qualifying spot for the final so a run-off was required.Gentle
won the toss, chose gate 2 and led all the way with Young on his
back wheel until the back straight on the last lap when he gave
up the chase.Gentle therefore took the last remaining place in
the final whereas Young would be 1st reserve.

Saturday 12 March:Junior World Final
at Salisbury
Under a hot sun the Salisbury track looked magnificent and
was suitably derssed up for this big occasion.36 riders started
out in the competition which started with 2 eliminators at Findon
which would eliminate just 4 riders(2 from each match) and then
moved on to 2 semi-finals at Le Fevre which saw the 28 survivors
from the eliminators join the 4 seeded riders. The top 8 from each
of the semi-finals then advanced to Salisbury for the 2005 Junior
World Final. The 16 riders consisted of 6 each from Australia and
England,3 from Wales and just 1 from Poland(who was the only one
to enter).2 further Australian riders were the reserves, however
1 of them(Ben Schumacher) didn't turn up
Heat 1 saw Daniel Pike rocket out of gate 1 and led all the way
as Ryan Jones got round Nicky Evans and Josh Ison to take 2nd
as the riders exited the 2nd turn.Evans then fell on the pits
bend and was unable to finish the race as his chain had come off.Meanwhile
as Pike was winning,Jones held off Ison for 2nd.Heat 2 would see
the clash of the Spear cousins,Mitchell and Lennon.it was Mitchell
who took the win from gate 1 as Lennon finished 3rd behind Simon
Gamble but in front of Ryan Bartram.Joe Clarke rocketed out of
the gate to win heat 3 from Dave Carmichael as Jono Birks held
3rd going down the back straight but Ryan Edson took 3rd with
an inside move going into turn 1 on the 2nd lap.Marcin Paradzinski
was the first rider to face 2 successive races from gate 1 and
he flew from the start in heat 4 to lead from Nick Myhill and
Chris Eaton but Peter Savage went up the inside of the latter
two going along the back straight.Eaton then passed Myhill on
the inside exiting the pits bend.As the riders started lap 2 Myhill
went for an inside move on Eaton who shut the Hethersett rider
down with both riders mounting the inside kerb and Eaton's momentum
carried him and Savage into the fence and the race was stopped. With
all 4 back in for a restart Paradzinski made the gate again from
1 to lead all the way with Savage repeating his earlier inside
pass on Myhill and Eaton. All 4 riders stayed on the track this
time as the order at the finish was Paradzinski,Savage,Myhill
and Eaton.
Paradzinski faced his 2nd successive straight gate 1 in heat 5
which had the hallmarks of being a cracking race and this was
emphasised by the fact that the 4 riders involved had all won
the first 4 heats. It needed 2 attempts before it got started as
in the first attempt Pike flew from gate 2 but went down courtesy
of a trailing Clarke leg, leaving Paradzinski and Mitchell Spear
nowhere to go.The restart saw Pike again lead from gate 2 with
Clarke getting inside Paradzinski going into the pits bend on
lap 1 then the Pole was relegated to the back of the field by
Mitchell Spear at the start of lap 2.Heat 6 got as far as turn
1lwhere Eaton and Carmichael collided and the race was called
back.At the restart Eaton led from Evans with Lennon Spear holding
3rd from Carmichael.Going into turn 1 on lap 2 Evans Nudged Eaton
who slipped, allowing Lennon Spear and Carmichael through for 2nd
and 3rd as Evans held on for the win with Eaton trailing in last.Heat
7 saw Myhill blast from gate 2 and lead all the way as the action
was going on behind him.As Birks,Gamble and Ison entered turn
1 they all tangled but as they exited turn 2 Gamble was in 2nd
ahead of Birks and Ison.Coming out of turn 2 on lap 3 Birks moved
inside Gamble to move into 2nd with Ison 3rd after taking advantage
of Gamble sliding off on the pits turn on lap 3.Gamble did remount
for the 4th place point. It was now the turn of Savage to face
2 successive races from gate 1 and he led all the way in heat
8 as behind him Bartram moved Jones over far enough for Edson
to Shoot through the gap for 2nd.Jones took 3rd after passing
Bartram up the inside at the start of lap 3 with Bartram falling
on turn 1 as he clipped Jones. He remounted for 4th.
Savage faced his 2nd gate 1 in heat 9 and he led all the way once
again.Going along the back straight Pike squeezed round Birks
and Lennon Spear to take 2nd and he also made a late but challenge
for the win but Savage held on as Birks took 3rd ahead of Lennon
Spear. In heat 10 Mitchell Spear made the best start and led all
the way from Evans as Edson passed Myhill for 3rd going along
the back straight but Myhill repeated the dose on Edson on the
last lap.Heat 11 saw Clarke hold his gate 1 and take the win but
a tremendous scrap went on behind him for the other places.Ison
held 2nd gfoing along the back straight on the 1st lap as Bartram
moved inside Eaton for 3rd.As the riders exited the pit bend to
start lap 2 Eaton powered up the indide of both Bartram and Ison
but 1 lap later Ison blasted round Eaton to take 2nd as Eaton
finished 3rd ahead of Bartram.Gamble was next up for 2 successive
races from gate 1 and in heat 12 he led all the way as Jones and
Carmichael both went past Paradzinski exiting turn 2 and going
along the back on the first lap as the race finished as per gate
positions.
Gamble faced his 2nd successive gate 1 in heat 13 but Pike rocketed
from gate 3 and led the Sheffield rider home with Eaton 3rd after
a late challenge on Gamble on the pit bend on the final lap which
backfired on him after he clipped Gamble's wheel and fell, picking
his bike up and walking home for 3rd.Meanwhile Edson, the other
rider in the race, failed to finish after falling on the pits bend
on the 1st lap.Heat 14 needed 3 attempts before it finally got
underway. In the first attempt Paradzinski shot out from gate 3
but the race was called back after Birks and Bartram got tangled
up.The restart saw Paradzinski again make the start and lead initially
from Bartram,Evans and Birks.Birks powered inside Evans as the
riders started lap 2 then got inside Bartram going into turn 1
but then Evans shot inside both Bartram and Birks and going along
the back straight the latter 2 riders tangled and ended up falling
after clipping the fence. That was seen to be a racing incident
so all 4 riders were called back.At the 3rd attempt Paradzinski
once again made the gate and led all the way with Evans powering
round Bartram and Birks for 2nd with Birks then passing Bartram
for 3rd on the pits bend on lap 3.Heat 15 got as far as turn 1
where Savage and Mitchell Spear collided and the race was stopped. With
all 4 riders back in Savage made the gate from gate 3 and led
all the way.A battle for the other palces went on behind him and
it saw Carmichael get round Ison for 2nd exiting turn 2 with Mitchell
Spear at the back.As the riders started lap 3 Mitchell Spear moved
inside Ison for 3rd.Exiting the pits bend on lap 3 both Mitchell
Spear and Ison went past Carmichael for 2nd and 3rd with the Welsh
rider relegated to last.Myhill was the final rider to face 2 successive
races from gate 1 and in heat 16 he led all the way with Jones
inside Clarke for 2nd going along the back straight on lap 1.Going
into turn 1 on lap 3 Clarke nudged Jones and took 2nd.Going into
the pits bend Lennon Spear moved inside Jones but was excluded
for an incident which was not seen by this scribe. The race was
stopped and as the last lap flag had already gone out the race
was awarded with Myhill winning from Clarke and Jones.
Heat 17 saw Myhill take his 2nd successive gate 1 in a race which
Pike needed to win to get a possible run-off for the championship, assuming
that Savage could win heat 18.Pike rocketed from gate 4 but slipped
as the riders exited turn 2 and was relegated to last as Myhill
held on to win from Carmichael and Bartram. This result meant that
Pike and Myhill were level on 16 points so they would have to
face a run-off for 3rd place at worst but this would depend what
would happen in the very next heat when Clarke and Savage met.So
on to that heat 18 and it would turn out to be THE race that everyone
would talk about. All Savage had to do was finish in front of Clarke
and he was champion. It was Clarke who made the start from gate
2 and Savage was up to 2nd after nipping inside Evans as the riders
exited turn 2 with Gamble at the back.If the front 2 held their
positions there would have to be a run-off for the championship.Savage
wasn't having that and went for an inside pass on Clarke going
into the pits bend on lap 2 but appeared to have his front wheel
taken away from him by Clarke and he fell with Evans having nowhere
to go.The whistel went and the race was stopped with a thus far
uneventful meeting suddenly bursting into life as referee Bob
Osborne pointed to Savage being the cause of the stoppage and
Savage was excluded. Then sensationally he changed his mind and
called a restart with all 4 riders. This saw the crowd's mood go
from orange to red alert as Osborne was then met with consecutive
protests from the pits. Then Osborne changed his mind again and
reverted back to his original decision which was to exclude Savage
which was not very popular with the crowd as they had apparently
seen a foul on him.Savage then appeared on the grid to protest
the decision(and quite rightly so in this scribe's opinion) but
was eventually persuaded to return to the pits.It then took several
minutes before order was restored and when it was Clarke gated
across Evans with Gamble getting round Evand going along the back
straight.Gamble then took up the chase and he lined up an inside
pass going into the first turn on the final lap but went down.Clarke
held on to win the race and clinch the title as Evans picked up
2nd with Gamble remounting for 3rd.Heat 19 saw Paradzinski lead
all the way from gate 2 as Ison got into 2nd from Lennon Spear
and Edson.Going into the pits bend on lap 3 Edson moved inside
Lennon Spear for 3rd then did likewise to Ison on the last lap
to take 2nd.Heat 20 didn't get off the start line at first due
to Birks and Eaton moving together at the start. The 2nd attempt
got as far as turn 1 when Birks went down after a collision. At
the 3rd try Jones led all the way from Birks,Eaton and Mitchell
Spear, who had fallen on the first turn after Eaton nudged him
but remounted for the 4th place point. The run-off between Pike
and Myhill was for 2nd and 3rd places and it saw Pike win the
toss and choose gate 2 with Myhill on 4.It needed 2 attempts to
get it started though. At first both riders used tactics for the
first lap but Pike was then told to speed up and got himself into
a muddle going along the back straight.Myhill went inside him
but both riders went sprawling on the pits bend and the race was
called back. The restart saw Pike make the gate and lead all the
way with Myhill keeping on his tail but he gave up the cahse on
the final lap.

Saturday 12 March:World Final at Salisbury
When the draw was initially made for this competition it would
have seen 4 eliminators,2 each at Findon and Salisbury.Findon's
first eliminator would have 13 riders and their 2nd one would
have seen 14,the same as the 2 Salisbury rounds. The top 12 scorers
from each elimination heat would advance to the Preliminary Finals. The
first Findon eliminator went ahead as scheduled but their 2nd
eliminator saw 2 riders withdraw before a wheel was turned. The
event still went ahead and 11 riders automatically advanced to
the Preliminary finals with the exception of Michael Ffrench, who
withdrew after his 3rd ride. This reprieved Mick Aris, who had originally
been eliminated after finishing 13th in the first eliminator. At
Salisbury their first eliminator was not held as 2 of the scheduled
14 riders withdrew so the remaining 12 riders advanced without
having to turn a wheel.Their 2nd eliminator went ahead though
with 13 riders(Tony Herd having withdrawn) with Andy Knowles originally
eliminated but later reprieved as David Carmichael subsequently
withdrew.
The next stage was the Preliminary Finals,1 was held at Findon
and the other 2 were held at Salisbury. The top 8 scorers fom each
event would then advance to the semi-finals with the 9th placed
riders originally scheduled to have a further run-off to determine
the last 2 qualifiers for the semi-finals but due to a subsequent
withdrawal that run-off was not required.
The next stage was then the semi-finals where the 26 qualifiers
from the Preliminary Finals would join the 6 seeded riders with
the top 8 from each semi-final advancing to the final.Of those
16 riders,7 riders were from England,3 were from Poland,3 were
from Australia,2 were from Wales and 1 was from Scotland.A further
Scottish rider and a further English rider were the reserves.
Heat 1 saw Pawel Kozlowski lead all the wat from gate 2 with Terry
Norman getting round Chris Jewkes for 2nd going into the pit bend
on lap 1 as Matt Gentle brought up the rear.Heat 2 saw Dave Murphy, the
oldest ever finalist and winner of the Veterans World Masters
6 days previously, make use of his gate 1 to lead all the way as
behind him Mark Winwood and Craig Newsome left a gap big enough
for Jack Spear to nip through for 2nd.Newsome then got ahead of
Winwood going along the back straight but Winwood repassed the
Scot going into the first turn on lap 2.Heat 3 saw the first of
6 exclusions handed out with Adam Peck harshly being the recipient
as he was adjudged to have moved at the start(he didn't appear
to move to this scribe).Aaron Lowey then made the gate from Daniel
Pudney but Lee Aris was inside both of them exiting turn 2.Aris
then gave Lowey a nudge going into the pits bend leaving a big
enough gap to which Pudney probably thought "Thank you very
much,I'll have that" and was through for the win as Aris
held off Lowey for 2nd.Karol Szymanski was the first rider to
face 2 successive gate 1's and heat 4 was the first one of them
but it needed 2 attempts before there was a result.Initially Szymanski
bolted from gate 1 as Lukasz Nowacki got round defending world
champion Dave Hemsley for 2nd going along the back straight with
1999 world champion Steve Harris bringing up the rear.At the start
of lap 2 Hemsley moved inside Nowacki and took 2nd.Going into
turn 1 on lap 3 Hemsley nudged Szymanski leaving a gap for Nowacki
to go up the inside but Nowacki then fell and Hemsley and Szymanski
ploughed into him.Harris then took the lead.Szymanski picked himself
up but as he did so the referee's whistle went, stopping the race. With
all 4 riders back in for the restart Szymanski held on to his
1st gate 1 to lead all the way as Hemsley held off Nowacki for
2nd with Harris at the back.
Heat 5 saw Szymanski take the 2nd of his 2 gate 1's.After a false
start due to excessive noise,he flew from gate 1 and led all the
way to inflict what would be Pudney's only defeat of the night
as Jewkes held off Murphy for 3rd.Heat 6 saw the 3rd straight
winner from gate 1,this time it was Hemsley who used it to lead
all the way from Kozlowski with Peck holding 3rd initially from
Newsome but on the pits bend on the final lap Peck clipped Kozlowski's
rear wheel and the lost momentum was enough for Newsome to take
3rd ahead of Peck.Aris continued the monopoly of race winners
from gate 1 by leading heat 7 all the way.Norman took 2nd after
powering round Harris and Winwood exiting turn 2 as Winwood took
3rd from Harris going into turn 1 on lap 3.It was now Nowacki's
turn to face 2 successive races from gate 1.Heat 8 was the first
of those and it needed 3 attempts before it got started. The first
2 attempts were false starts as firstly Gentle and Lowey both
moved at the tapes with the referee unable to decide who moved
first so all 4 were left in.The 2nd attempt saw Gentle move on
his own but there was too much noise so again all 4 riders were
left in.At the 3rd attempt Nowacki held his 1st gate 1 and led
all the way as all the action was going on behind him.Gentle got
into 2nd ahead of Spear going along the back straight on lap 1
with Lowey at the back.At the end of lap 1 Spear lost control
of his bike and fell after clipping Gentle, allowing Lowey through
for 2nd.On the pit bend on the final lap Gentle went for an inside
pass on Lowey but hit him with both riders falling.Spear rode
round the carnage and took 2nd,Gentle picked himself up for 3rd
and a clearly disgusted(and rightly so) Lowey picked his bike
up and walked across the line for 4th.
Nowacki faced his 2nd successive gate 1 in heat 9 and he made
use of it,leading all the way with Newsome gating in 2nd but Aris
got inside him exiting turn 2 and held on for 2nd.Jewkes took
3rd after passing Newsome going into the first turn on lap 2.Heat
10 saw Lowey nudged onto the centre green by Kozlowski and Murphy
as the riders left the start and the race was called back. The
restart, with all 4 riders, saw Lowey lead from gate 1 but Murphy
went down going into turn 1 after clashing with Kozlowski and
the race was stopped again with all 4 called back.At the 3rd attempt
Lowey led all the way from gate 1 as Harris poweded round Murphy
and Kozlowski and took 2nd with Kozlowski 3rd after passing Murphy
on the pits bend. That was to be Lowey's final race of the night,as
he had suffered a back injury in his incident with Gentle in heat
8.Heat 11 saw the 8th successive race winner from gate 1 with
Pudney rocketing out and leading all the way with Norman holding
2nd from Hemsley who had got round Spear going along the back
straight.Exiting turn 2 on lap 2 Hemsley dived inside Norman and
took 2nd with Norman holding on to 3rd from Spear.Winwood was
next for 2 successive races from gate 1 with heat 12 being the
first of them.It needed 3 attempts before it got started.Firstly
Szymanski bolted from gate 4 but Peck got nudged into the fence
going into turn 1 and the race was called back.At the 2nd attempt
Szymanski again rocketed from gate 4 but slid off going into turn
1 and collected Winwood with the race stopped againAt the 3rd
attempt Winwood made the gate and nudged Gentle whose momentum
carried him over to Szymanski.Peck nipped through the gap to take
2nd as Winwood took the win to make it 9 race winners in a row
from gate 1.Meanwhile Gentle held off Szymanski for 3rd.
Heat 13 saw Pete Young called into action to replace his injured
Poole team-mate Lowey and Winwood take his 2nd gate 1.The race
needed 2 attempts to get it started as firstly Young and Jewkes
moved at the tapes at the same time but both were reprieved. At
the 2nd attempt Winwood made the gate as Jewkes nipped inside
Hemsley and Young exiting turn 2.Hemsley then went inside Jewkes
for 2nd at the start of lap 2.On lap 3 Hemsley got round Winwood
going into turn 1 and at the smae time Jewkes nudged Winwood who
slid off, allowing Young through for 3rd.Hemsley held on to win
from Jewkes with Young 3rd and
Winwood remounting for 4th.Heat 14 needed 4 attempts before it
started. The first attempt was deemed a false start due to excessive
noise. The second attempt saw Szymanski sent back to the pits for
moving whilst under starters orders. The 3rd attempt was a carbon
copy of the first attempt. When the race finally got underway Aris
gated round Spear and led all the way with Kozlowski 2nd after
passing Spear going into turn 1 on lap 3.Heat 15 saw Norman make
use of his gate 1 and lead all the way with Peck taking 2nd after
passing Nowacki up the inside going into the pits bend as Murphy
trailed in last.Harris was the final rider to face 2 successive
grid 1's and the first of them, heat 16,needed 3 attempts before
it got underway.Firstly Gentle clearly moved under orders, breaking
the starting tape in the process and earning himself an exclusion. The
2nd attempt saw Harris and Pudney make the gate together with
Harris on the inside and Pudney on the outside.Going into the
pits bend Pudney went round Harris who then rammed the Australian. The
race was stopped and Harris was excluded. At the 3rd attempt Pudney
gated round Newsome and led all the way.
Heat 17 saw Harris take his 2nd successive gate 1 and it needed
3 attempts before it started.Firstly Spear and Jewles moved together, then
Peck twitched and was excluded.Harris then used his gate 1 to
lead all the way from Spear and Jewkes.Pudney faced his final
race in heat 18 and a win would see him take the championship,2nd
place would give him a run-off with Hemsley or Aris for the championship
depending on which one of those 2 would win heat 20..The race
needed 3 attempts before it started as firstly the tape didn't
go up evenly, then Kozlowski twitched whilst under orders and was
excluded.at the 3rd attempt Pudney made the gate and held off
Nowacki for the win which was enough for him to become only the
second Austrailan to be crowned World Champion.Winwood trailed
in 3rd.Heat 19 saw Young replace Lowey once again.Szymanski bolted
from gate 2 and led all the way with Newsome 2nd ahead of fellow
Scot Young as Norman trailed in last.Heat 20 would decide the
remaining rostrum places as whoever finished in front out of Hemsley
and Aris would take 2nd overall.Gentle and Aris made the gate
but exiting turn 2 they left a gap big enough for Hemsley to nip
through for the race win and 2nd overall as Gentle finished 2nd
ahead of Aris who passed Murphy on the pits bend.

Brad, who were riding on their home track, both played their part
in the win.Wales tracked Aaron Hughes and Mark Carmichael and
despite their brave efforts the Australians always held the upper
hand.Young Carmichael produced an excellent performance, managing
3 impressive rides when he responded to team riding from older

today belonged to Sheffield.Martin Gamble sat the match out after
suffering ligament problems which he sustained during the 2nd

Monday 14 March:Rest of the World v
Poland at Findon
This match was to be Poland's final match of the tour as they
would be leaving on Wednesday. The Rest of the World side appeared
in South Australia tops and their side consisted of 4 English
riders(Lee Aris,Terry Norman,Garry Pearce and GB team manager
Steve Harris),2 Welsh riders(Allan Busby and Dave Murphy),1 Australian
rider(World Champion Daniel Pudney) and 1 Scottish rider(Craig
Newsome).
Heat 1 saw Karol Szymanski fly from gate 1 and lead all the way
with Lee Aris and Terry Norman combining to keep Marcin Paradzinski
at the back for a shared heat.Heat 2 saw Steve Harris lead from
the gate pursued by Pawel Cegielski who passed Harris going into
the pits bend on lap 3.Meanwhile Dave Murphy held off Pawel Kozlowski
for 3rd in another shared heat.Heat 3 saw Lukasz Nowacki lead
all the way from gate 1 with World Champion Daniel Pudney slotting
into 2nd initially as Garry Pearce went inside Tomasz Wlodarczyk
for 3rd going into turn 1.Pudney then allowed Pearce through for
2nd exiting turn 2 as the race finished Nowacki,Pearce,Pudney
and Wlodarczyk for yet another shared heat.Heat 4 got as far as
turn 1 when Allan Busby and Paradzinski collided and all 4 riders
were called back.At the 2nd attempt Busby tangled with Paradzinski
on the run to turn 1 and was relegated to last as Paradzinski
led from Aris and Tomasz Szwajorek.Going into turn 1 on lap 2
Paradzinski moved Aris over far enough for Szwajorek to go through
up the inside but there was a big enough gap for Aris to shoot
up the inside and go on to win from Szwajorek,Paradzinski and
Busby for a 4th successive shared heat.Heat 5 saw Jacek Wojciechowski
lead from Norman,Szymanski and Craig Newsome. It remained that
way until the pits bend on lap 3 when Norman moved inside Wojciechowski
who lost control of his bike and fell.Norman held on for the win
with Szymanski holding off Newsome for 2nd as Wojciechowski remounted
for 4th.This was the first heat advantage of the match with the
6-4 to ROW putting them 2 points up.Heat 6 got as far as turn
1 when Pearce was put over the inside edge so all 4 riders were
called back.At the 2nd attempt Kozlowski emerged in front from
Pearce,Pudney and Cegielski.Going down the back straight on lap
2 Pudney moved round Pearce for 2nd then going into the pits bend
on lap 3 Pudney moved inside Kozlowski who then slowed Pearce
up enough for
Cegielski to shoot round the outside as Pudney held on to win
ahead of Cegielski,Kozlowski and Pearce for a 5th shared heat
out of 6.Heat 7 saw Nowacki lead from Norman with Wlodarczyk holding
off Aris.It stayed that way until Norman moved inside Nowacki
and held on for the win with Wlodarczyk 3rd and Aris trailed off
at the back to make it 6 shared heats out of 7.Heat 8 saw Szymanski
unleash one of his rocket-like gates to lead all the way from
Murphy,Paradzinski and Harris with the resultant 6-4 to Poland
making the scores level.Heat 9 saw Cegielski make the gate and
lead all the way from Busby with Pearce holding off Szwajorek
for 3rd in another shared heat,the 7th in 9 races,which made the
interval score Rest of the World 45 Poland 45.
Heat 10 only got as far as turn 1 when Newsome got a nudge from
Kozlowski and fell.The restart,with all 4 riders,saw Newsome and
Kozlowski gate together but Newsome nudged Kozlowski going into
turn 2 which saw the Pole relegated to the back after skidding.Newsome
held on for the win as Pudney took advantage of Kozlowski's skid
to nip through for 2nd ahead of Wojciechowski and Kozlowski. The
7-3 to ROW,the first one of the match for any side, put them 4
points ahead.Heat 11 saw Nowacki power out from gate 3 and lead
all the way with team-mate Wlodarczyk 2nd initially from the ROW
pair of Harris and Murphy.Going into the pits bend Harris nudged
Wlodarczyk out wide allowing Murphy through for 2nd with Harris
3rd ahead of Wlodarczyk.Heat 12 got as far as turn 1 when it was
called back as the referee was not happy with the progress of
the race. The restart was also called back after Norman and Cegielski
crossed the inside edge.At the 3rd attempt Norman led all the
way from gate 1 ahead of Cegielski with Aris holding off Kozlowski
for 3rd and a ROW 6-4 to increase their lead by 6 points.Heat
13 saw another one of Szymanski's flying starts as he led all
the way with Pearce and Pudney combining to keep Paradzinski at
the back.Heat 14 got as far as turn 1 when the referee called
the race back as he wasn't happy with the progress.the 2nd try
saw Nowacki get in front but Wojciechowski went round him exiting
turn 2 as Nowacki held off Murphy and Busby for a Poland 7-3 which
brought the gap down to 2 points.Heat 15 saw Wlodarczyk make the
start and lead all the way from Harris as Newsome held off Szwajorek
for 3rd.Heat 16 saw Poland make a reserve change as Wojciechowski
came in for Kozlowski. The race didn't get off the start line at
first as Paradzinski was deemed to have moved whilst under orders
and was sent back to the pits.Wojciechowski took the race win
ahead of Pearce and Norman. The resultant 5-4 put ROW 3 up.Heat
17 saw Aris gate round Cegielski and hold on for the win with
Wlodarczyk holding off Murphy for 3rd.This meant that ROW were
still 3 points up and meant that in heat 18 Poland needed a 7-3
to take the lead for the only time in the match and clinch victory.Nowacki
and Szymanski got that 7-3 by powering round Pudney and Harris
to sign off Poland's involvement on the tour with a victory.

Tuesday 15 March:Australia v Great
Britain-Junior Test No 5 at Salisbury
Australia made 2 changes,David Hartman and Daniel Thompson
making way for Ryan Edson and Peter Savage.GB were suffering from
problems within the squad and hassle away from the track which
gave the team manager a sleepless night. Also Daniel Pike, who was
rested from the previous match, was unavailable for selection for
this match due to a throat infection so the squad showed just
1 change from the previous match at Le Fevre with Chris Davies
coming in for Ryan Bartram in a squad which had a distinctly Welsh
look about it(apart from Nick Myhill and Simon Gamble).
Heat 1 saw Nick Myhill make the gate and lead all the way from
Mitchell Spear with Dave Carmichael holding off Troy Cowell for
3rd.Heat 2 saw Lennon Spear and Ryan Jones gate together but going
into turn 1 the former moved the latter over far enough for Peter
Savage to go through and win with L Spear holding off R Jones
for 2nd and Ryan Hughes trailing in at the back.Heat 3 saw Josh
Ison outgate Simon Gamble and lead him all the way with Nicky
Evans holding off Ryan Edson for 3rd.Heat 4 saw M Spear make the
gate and lead all the way as Kieran Jones gated round Ben Schumacher
to take 2nd and Carmichael holding off the former to take 3rd.Heat
5 needed 4 attempts before it started. The 1st attempt saw Myhill
make the gate and lead from Brad Gentle,Chris Davies and Cowell.Going
into the pits bend Myhill went down and Davies ploughed into him.The
race was stopped and all 4 were put back in.The 2nd attempt had
hardly left the start when Cowell ran into Davies who fell again
and the race was called back again. The 3rd attempt got as far
as turn 1 when Davies fell for the 3rd time and Cowell went down
as well.Once again all 4 called back for a restart.At the 4th
attempt Myhill made the gate and led all the way from Gentle with
Cowell 3rd after going round Davies going into turn 1 on lap 2.1
lap later Davies was thrown from his bike for the FOURTH time
in 1 race but he got back on to take 4th.Heat 6 saw Ison make
the gate and lead all the way with the 3 Ryans in the race,Edson,Hughes
and Jones, having a battle for the other places. At the end of lap
1 Hughes emerged in 2nd place and stayed there with R Jones taking
3rd from Edson after an inside pass going into the pits bend on
lap 3.Heat 7 saw Evans make the gate and lead from M Spear,Gamble
and Cowell. That's how it stayed until the start of the last lap
when M Spear powered round Evans and went on to win with Gamble
holding off Cowell for 3rd.Heat 8 saw an even break from the start
but exiting turn 2 Carmichael emerged in front ahead of Savage,Myhill
and L Spear.Going into the pits bend Myhill moved inside Savage,as
did L Spear but up front Carmichael was away clear for the win
ahead of Myhill,L Spear and Savage.Heat 9 saw the Jones brothers
combine for a 7-3.Ryan made the gate and led all the way as going
into turn 1 Kieran took advantage of a big gap left by Ison to
nip through for 2nd ahead of the Australian captain with Schumacher
trailing in last.
HALF TIME SCORE:Australia 42 Great Britain 48
Heat 10 saw Hughes make the gate and lead all the way with Gentle
and Edson combining to keep Davies at the back.Heat 11 saw Gamble
make the gate and lead all the way from Savage with L Spear taking
3rd after passing Evans on the inside going into turn 1 on lap
3.Heat 12 saw Australia make a reserve change as Gentle replaced
Cowell.The 1st attempt(of 2) got as far as turn 1 when Gentle
was nudged over the inside edge and all 4 riders were called back.At
the 2nd attempt R Jones outgated Gentle and lead all the way.M
Spear held 2nd from Hughes until the last bend when he slid off, allowing
Hughes through for 2nd with Gentle taking 3rd from the remounted
M Spear.Heat 13 saw Myhill lead all the way from gate 3.Behind
him going into turn 1 Carmichael moved Ison over which enabled
Edson to go through the gap and take 2nd with Carmichael holding
off Ison for 3rd.Heat 14 needed 3 tries to get it started. The
1st try saw all 4 riders go into the 1st bend together but exiting
turn 2 Davies emerged in front with Gamble slotting into 2nd but
going into the pits bend the race was stopped. All 4 riders were
put back in.The 2nd attempt saw L Spear take the lead from Gamble
and Davies with Schumacher at the back.As the riders started lap
2 Gamble clipped L Spear's bike and fell,Davies subsequently ploughing
into Gamble's bike and taking a heavy fall, landing on his shoulder. It
was the FIFTH time that Davies had fallen from his bike in the
match. The race was stopped and all 4 riders were put back in again. At
the 3rd attempt L Spear made the gate and led all the way with
the plucky Davies powering his way into 2nd exiting the pits bend
as Gamble held off Schumacher for 3rd.Heat 15 saw Evans make the
gate and lead from Savage with Gentle 3rd after going inside K
Jones on the pits bend.Going into turn 1 on lap 2 Gentle went
down after a challenge by K Jones and the race was stopped. The
restart, with all 4 back in,saw Evans lead all the way from Savage
with Gentle 3rd after an inside pass on K Jones going into turn
1 on lap 3.The latter made 1 last attempt to get in front of Gentle
but fell going into turn 1 on lap 4,remounting foir 4th.Heat 16
saw Australia make a reserve change with Schumacher replacing
Ison.Hughes rocketed from gate 2 and lead all the way from initially
Carmichael,Cowell and Schumacher.Going into the pits bend on lap
2 Cowell nudged Carmichael allowing Schumacher through for 2nd.Carmichael
subsequently took 3rd from Cowell after passing him going into
turn 1 on lap 3.The 6-4 to GB put them 14 up and meant that they
needed just 1 rider to finish any of the last 2 races to seal
a whitewash.Heat 17 saw GB make a reserve change with K Jones
replacing Evans in a race that would see the Spear cousins up
against the Jones Brothers.M Spear gated round R Jones but nehind
them L Spear was given no room to ride by K Jones who was excluded. The
restart saw R Jones outgate the Spears and lead them all the way
to seal victory on the night and a whitewash for the Junior Lions.Heat
18 saw Myhill gate round from 4 and lead all the way to complete
his 3rd unbeaten performance of the series.Going along the back
straight Gamble was the meat in a green and yellow sandwich but
exiting the pits bend he powered inside Savage and went on to
take 2nd with Edson at the back.

led all the way with Jack Spear taking advantage of a tangle between
Mike Morgans and Matt Gentle to take 2nd.Meanwhile Morgans held
off Gentle for 3rd.Heat 2 saw Garry Pearce and World Junior Champion

start at first due to simultaneous movement whilst under orders.Gentle
then made the gate and led all the way from Aris with J Spear
3rd after passing Williamson on the inside going into the pits
bend.Heat 8 needed 4 attempts to get it started.The 1st attempt
saw Norman make the gate but the race was called back following
a clash of bikes going into turn 1.The 2nd attempt saw Clarke
nudge Norman over the inside edge on the run into turn 1 and the
race was called back again. The 3rd attempt saw the same 2 riders
collide and fall going into turn 1 and once again a restart was
called. The 4th attempt saw a tight 1st bend but Norman emerged
in front and led all the way from M Spear as Clarke held off Morgans(who
fell going into the pits bend on lap 1) for 3rd.heat 9 saw Hemsley
and Newsome make the gate and lead all the way from L Spear and
Cowell.Newsome won the race after Hemsley let him round going
into turn 3
HALF TIME SCORE:Australia 38 Great Britain 51
Heat 10 saw Pudney gate round Pearce and lead all the way.Behind
him Pearce tried an inside move on Pudney going into turn 3 but

all the way from Aris with Williamson holding off M Spear fro
3rd.heat 12 saw Hemsley blast from gate 1 and lead all the way
from Gentle with Pearce holding off J Spear for 3rd.heat 13 saw
Pudney blast out from gate 1 and lead all the way from Norman(his
only defeat of the match) with Morgans holding off L Spear for
3rd.Heat 14 saw a tight 1st bend but exiting turn 2 M Spear and
Cowell emerged in front.Going into the pits bend Aris got round
Cowell and into the lead with M Spear 3rd from Winwood.Going into
lap 2 M Spear had made his way to the front and would stay there
for the win.Behind him going into turn 1 on lap 3 Aris tried an
inside move on L Spear but lost control of his bike and dropped
back to last but going into the pits bend Winwood nudged Cowell, thus
enabling Aris to retake 2nd ahead of Winwood and Cowell.Heat 15
saw an even break from the start but exiting turn 2 Clarke emerged
in front ahead of Williamson,Jesson and Newsome.Going along the
back straight Williamson fell after clipping Clarke and the whistle
went to stop the race. The restart, with all 4 riders, saw Clarke
make the gate and lead all the way.Newsome took 2nd after gating
round from gate 4 and Williamson held off Jesson for 3rd.GB were
nmow 13 points ahead and to be certain of victory they needed
both riders to finish in each of the remaining 3 races.Heat 16
got as far as turn 1 where Pearce fell after tangling with J Spear. The
2nd attempt saw both Morgans and Pearce outgate the Spears,Jack
and Lennon with Jack losing his bike after tangling with Pearce
who went on to win the race after Morgans let him round going
into the pits bend for the final time with the Spears finishing
as Lennon 3rd ahead of the remounted Jack. That 7-3 to GB was enough
to give them victory on the night and seal a whitewash.Heat 17
saw GB make a change with Winwood replacing Williamson.Hemsley
oputgated M Spear and led him all the way to complete a superb
paid maximum.Gentle took 3rd ahead of Winwood who fell going into
the pits bend on lap 2,remounting for 4th.Heat 18 saw Norman make
the gate and lead all the way from Australia's 2 world champions
Clarke and Pudney with Aris at the back after being left at the
gate.
So the whitewash was sealed and Great Britain had recaptured the
Senior Ashes for the first time since 1993 and with their first
whitewash since 1988.It was GB's greater strength in depth which
told but there was enough seen of the Australian Juniors who had
won the Junior World Team Cup to convince everyone that the battle
will be on again on the next tour.Team manager Steve Harris had
reversed the series losses of 1997(when he was captain) and 2001.
